Oswin, from Old English, meaning 'God's Friend'.

Do you think its usable? Oswin nn Ozzy, for a boy? Honest opinions welcome!

So, I think it’s very cool. The kind of name a kid who liked metal would have. When looking at it on paper though, would people call him swine? I’m just trying to be honest, I do love the name. Kids can be cruel though.

Twizbe · 20/02/2023 17:43

Makes me think of Oswyn Murray but that's a very niche reference.

LucyLoopyLu · 20/02/2023 17:45

I like it, but I'm a historical fiction fanatic, so maybe my opinion doesn't count 😅

AnotherSpare · 20/02/2023 17:48

I work with an Oswin! I like it, it gives me medieval vibes, same as Edgar, Alfred, etc.

Lulu1919 · 20/02/2023 17:50

I know one

Pieceofpurplesky · 20/02/2023 17:53

Love it. There is a St Oswin's church.

pursudebyablackdog · 20/02/2023 17:55

It's a cool name. There was a very notable Anglo-Saxon king called Oswin, by all accounts he was a bit of a dude!

LavenderSloe · 20/02/2023 18:04

Like it much better as Oswyn but I like it. Oz is a cool nn

CPL593H · 20/02/2023 18:06

Thinking of the very sweet Brother Oswin in Cadfael.

Good meaning and great nicknames. Def usable.

MockneyReject · 20/02/2023 18:14

There was an Oswin, known as Ozzy in DCs class. No-one called him Swine, just Ozzy, occasionally Oswin.
I prefer it to the similarly named - Oisin, Orrin and 3 Ollie's, in the class.

I don't think many people would think like this - the pronunciation is also different

ThunderRolls88 · 20/02/2023 18:31

Hmmm I hadn't considered the Oswyn spelling. My 'safe' option is Luke!

Also surprised at the replies saying they know someone called Oswin. Makes me feel better, as I was concerned people would think it was a name I had made up myself or something.

Yes, I am pronouncing it as Os-win, not Os-wine

The more I say it, the more I like it. I take that as a good sign cause sometimes I say a name over and over and end up hating it

MiltonRoad · 20/02/2023 18:36

I'd think you were a dr who fan

MobyJeff · 20/02/2023 18:42

Absolutely love it! I prefer the Oswyn spelling, and I'd assume you had Welsh heritage (probably ignorantly) but yes, you should totally use it. 👍

WinterFoxes · 20/02/2023 18:50

I love it. Very cool name.

KirstenBlest · 20/02/2023 18:53

I know two. Not sure if they spell it with a y or i, y, I think.

ThunderRolls88 · 20/02/2023 18:54

'Oswin' seems to be the most popular spelling according to baby name sites, which is why I'm drawn to using it rather than the y spelling.

Great to hear the positive opinions! Do you prefer Oswin to Luke?

OP posts:
KirstenBlest · 20/02/2023 18:55

@MobyJeff , some of the -wyn names aren't of Welsh origin, but might be used in Wales. Elwyn, Alwyn and Edwyn, for example.

If you use the -wyn spelling, be prepared for people transposing the y and w.

Yes! Me too!
Love Oswin OP, different but not mad! 😁

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/02/2023 18:57

Blimey, sorry, that was an over abundance of exclamation marks

Twizbe · 20/02/2023 19:08

Prefer Oswin to Luke for sure.

Twoinapod · 20/02/2023 21:17

Maybe use both and have Oswin Luke

love Oswin

ThunderRolls88 · 20/02/2023 22:39

I like Oswin Luke, but middle name would be James after my dad.

Oswin James has a nice ring to it.
