My friends say my husband and I have chosen 'cruel' names

My husband and I are expecting our first child together in early June this year and we're both a mixture of nerves and excitement. We are both fans of traditional names and so have decided on Arthur for a boy or Edith for a girl (we've decided to wait until the actual birth to find out the gender). I think these names are really sweet and could work for both a child and adult. Both our families have said they love the names, however when I mentioned it to my friends they started laughing and told me it was cruel to name our child something so old fashioned as they'll be ridiculed at school. My husband and I don't see where they're coming from but I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions on this?

Personally I don’t like Edith , sorry

RobinRobinMouse · 20/02/2023 15:17

Edith, or Edie, is one of the most beautiful names out there in my opinion. Elegant and classy.

Lweji · 20/02/2023 15:19

Arthur was nº 10 last year.

Edith would remind me of Allo, Allo, but the children wouldn´t have a clue, probably. Still, better than, say, Aria (nº 8), which is so obviously GOT.

Cruel names, IMO, are "unique" names which need to be spelled out every single time.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 20/02/2023 15:19

Those names are lovely and have been due a come-back IMO.

What are their children's names? Tell each friend that you will probably name your child the same name as their child. People who are odd about names are usually odd about 'owning' their own child's name. Then they will be relieved when it turns out to be Arthur or Edith.

RobinRobinMouse · 20/02/2023 15:19

Also, there a lots of great female role models whoe were named Edith.

Butteredtoast55 · 20/02/2023 15:19

They are both lovely names. Edith is unusual but I know one who is 4, and a couple of recent Arthurs so they most certainly will not be ridiculed for having 'out there' names! I also don't think much of your friends if they think making fun of a child's name is acceptable as this implies they'd let their children do it too.
As someone who works with children they just take other children's names in their stride. The only time I have ever known a child get in a pickle over a classmate's name was mistaking Horatio for Pinocchio 😂

WonderingWanda · 20/02/2023 15:21

I know a couple of Arthur's and a teenage Edith who has no problem with her name and is considered quite cool!

HalloumiFries · 20/02/2023 15:22

I had a friend called Arthur in the late 80s/early 90s when it was unusual. I lived the name and vowed to use it if I had a son (which I didn't). Still love it now.

A close friend has a 6 year old Edith - not a name I would have considered but as soon as she announced it, I loved it and her daughter really suits it. My sister keeps going on about the awful name though so it's maybe a bit marmite.

In short - I love both your names and your friends are odd.

ColdHandsHotHead · 20/02/2023 15:22

They are lovely names. I'd be looking for new friends.

twitterexile · 20/02/2023 15:28

Beautiful names OP, really lovely.
Get new friends - they sound dire.

GatoradeMeBitch · 20/02/2023 15:31

Your friends seem a little out of touch then. Children have been given cute vintage names like these for over a decade at this point. Presumably Edith will be called Edie. There are many little Arthurs and Edie's at schools all over the country.

Unless they mean old-fashioned as in "Pastel bunting Cath Kidston Keep Calm and Carry On" baby names are so five years ago?

SleepingStandingUp · 20/02/2023 15:33

I'm assuming your friends don't get it much. Nanna and Grandpa names have been a big thing for.... nearly a decade?? My friend has an Elsie who's 9, that's about when I started hearing all the old people names. No kids will Bat an eyelid at those lovely names

Pipsquiggle · 20/02/2023 15:33

Both good, solid names.

I know loads of Arthurs and a few Ediths

Smoothlines · 20/02/2023 15:34

Gosh, do your friends not know any small children? These types of names have been popular for over a decade. I’m personally not keen on Arthur - but plenty of other people are - but I like Edith a huge amount.

Lovely names
Congrats 🥳 on your pregnancy 🤰🏼

escapingthecity · 20/02/2023 15:39

This is why you should never tell anyone your baby names until the child is here.

Snowpatrolling · 20/02/2023 15:39

My friends son and daughter are named Arthur and Edith!
they are 3 and 1. Really suits them!

Biscuitsneeded · 20/02/2023 15:40

Not at all - lovely names.

DipperandMabel · 20/02/2023 15:41

I was expecting you to say names like Bandit and Chilli or something!

Arthur and Edith will not stand out in any negative way at all and are nice names.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 20/02/2023 15:41

….what are your friends’ names?

I’m happy to express an opinion.

mindutopia · 20/02/2023 15:49

Perfectly normal names. My primary age dc have several Arthur's and Edith's in their school.

Backstreets · 20/02/2023 15:50

Lovely names, and can easily be abbreviated to Art and Edie.

Yes, that can make a person grumpy.

ChungusBoi · 20/02/2023 15:55

I know a happy 16 year old Arthur and he isn’t teased for his name. Don’t know any Eadie’s sorry, but as a name it’s fine too IMO.

WinterFoxes · 20/02/2023 16:00

Both names are fine. Arthur is cute and lovely and has been around for ages now as aretro 'old' name. Edith is an absolutely classic Anglo-Saxon queen's name. Very cool. I'm not so keen on the sound 'Edith' but adore the nn Edie.
