My friends say my husband and I have chosen 'cruel' names

My husband and I are expecting our first child together in early June this year and we're both a mixture of nerves and excitement. We are both fans of traditional names and so have decided on Arthur for a boy or Edith for a girl (we've decided to wait until the actual birth to find out the gender). I think these names are really sweet and could work for both a child and adult. Both our families have said they love the names, however when I mentioned it to my friends they started laughing and told me it was cruel to name our child something so old fashioned as they'll be ridiculed at school. My husband and I don't see where they're coming from but I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions on this?

They're not to my taste, but perfectly nice names and very popular

YukoandHiro · 20/02/2023 14:21

Omg completely NORMAL names. I have a 5y and a 2yo and have met a few boys and girls with these names in the last few years so not unusual at all.
Tell your "friend" she's rude and to mind her own business if she can't share in your happiness

blackpearwhitelilies · 20/02/2023 14:22

They are lovely names and your friend sounds a bit spiteful. I know lots of little Arthurs and Edith is a cool name. I know one Edith who is in her 30s.

xogossipgirlxo · 20/02/2023 14:22

These are lovely names.

LavenderOlive21 · 20/02/2023 14:23

Edith was on our names list for girls too, and we now know two little girls called Edith (nickname Edie for both).

Arthur is also lovely, have lost count of the number of Arthur’s I’ve met at baby groups.

If you like the names, go for them :)

rebecca100 · 20/02/2023 14:23

My baby boy is due early May, he is going to be an Arthur and from who we have told have only had good reactions. Ignore your friends, they are both beautiful choices. Before being pregnant I never understood parents being secretive and not wanting to share name's, I know fully understand why!!

DarkShade · 20/02/2023 14:24

I've met little ones with both of those names! Edith is a beautiful name, a strong timeless name for a woman and cute abbreviation Edie little girl. Your friends are idiots. You know this now, but this is why you never reveal name ahead of time.

whowhatwhen · 20/02/2023 14:24

Both beautiful names and bollocks to what anyone else thinks!

Mysmallgarden · 20/02/2023 14:25

Arthur is very popular just now, and Edith is due for a comeback. Both lovely names.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 20/02/2023 14:25

I love both of those names. I thought you were going to say you'd chosen something made up or with alternative spelling. What sort of names do your friends kids have?

wordler · 20/02/2023 14:25

The only mistake you made was telling people the names before the birth.

before there’s a real baby everyone feels happy to share their sometimes cruel opinion.

Once it’s attached to a real baby they usually just say ‘how lovely”

8fttrampoline · 20/02/2023 14:25

I wonder if your friends have children, because most classrooms are full of a mix of old fashioned and modern names these days?

I think both your names are really lovely!

bakewellbride · 20/02/2023 14:26

They are ridiculous- those are both current and popular names! I can think of more than one of each off the top of my head.

I thought this thread was going to be about Fox and Princess or whatever.

You've chosen lovely and incredibly popular names. Eedie is a lovely nickname too.

ItchyBillco · 20/02/2023 14:26

Your friends are dicks.

It’s probably better to not tell anyone your name choices ahead of time because their reactions may colour how you feel about them. Some people feel entitled to odd comment when really they should nod and smile and say ‘how lovely’, because it’s nothing to do with them. People don’t tend to comment negatively on names once they’re given to a child. Well, some people do but they’re real pricks.

Moontide · 20/02/2023 14:27

They obviously don’t know many small children. Both names are back in fashion now, Arthur is really really popular! Your friends don’t sound very nice though.

WombatBombat · 20/02/2023 14:27

Yep very current and popular names.

I know 8 Arthur’s born in the last 3 years and 3 Edith’s.

Probablymagrat · 20/02/2023 14:27

I know 3 little Arthurs, and 2 little Ediths, your friends need to get up to date, these types of names are very on trend. Or get new friends.

fyn · 20/02/2023 14:29

Both are top 100 names, I’m pretty sure Arthur was in the top ten in England!

Growlybear83 · 20/02/2023 14:30

Sorry, I think they are really old fashioned names and although I wouldn't say it's cruel to use these names, especially given some of the ridiculous made up names that some people give their children, I do think they could well be teased. I'm saying this as someone who is married to an Albert who was teased mercilessly at school, and whose name sometimes still provokes a snigger even now.

HalftermHell2 · 20/02/2023 14:32

They were the girl and boy names we chose for one of our children (we never found out the sex so had a boy and a girls name ready to go). I love the names and did name one of my children one of those names! I love old traditional names, they're timeless and lovely. Ignore them.

Holly60 · 20/02/2023 14:32

Lovely names. Go for it

KirstenBlest · 20/02/2023 14:32

Given that Arthur is extremely popular, there must be a lot of 'cruel' parents out there.
Edie is quite popular too.
They're just normal names.

If you are married to an Albert he must be at least 25 years old. 25 years (and probably back to the early 70s) these names were not in fashion so your husband would have been unusual amongst all the Marks and Garys and Stevens and Matts.

Now, however, it is completely mainstream so there would be no grounds to tease. Whereas a baby Gary now might be in for a rough ride...

NeverApologiseNeverExplain · 20/02/2023 14:35

BTW @Growlybear83 what adults do you hang about with who would snigger at a grown man's name? How childish.
