My friends say my husband and I have chosen 'cruel' names

My husband and I are expecting our first child together in early June this year and we're both a mixture of nerves and excitement. We are both fans of traditional names and so have decided on Arthur for a boy or Edith for a girl (we've decided to wait until the actual birth to find out the gender). I think these names are really sweet and could work for both a child and adult. Both our families have said they love the names, however when I mentioned it to my friends they started laughing and told me it was cruel to name our child something so old fashioned as they'll be ridiculed at school. My husband and I don't see where they're coming from but I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions on this?

Gorgeous names. Ignore!

Loopsy123 · 20/02/2023 17:14

These are lovely names and are actually already in schools now as they have made a come back. Love them both, ignore your friends!

mathanxiety · 20/02/2023 17:26

Your friends are:

1 Rude. Really, really rude.
2 Way out of touch with current naming trends.

Edith is pretty stylish to me - beautiful Edith in The Last Kingdom, Edith Piaf the iconic singer, Edith Bowman the DJ.

I must admit I never really understood why Edith Bowman had such an old fashioned, frumpy name. I do think that at least Edie could be stylish, like Edie Sedgwick, who was considered very cool in her day.

jmh740 · 20/02/2023 17:46

I work in a highschool no Edith's but quite a few Arthur's don't listen to your friend

Wonnle · 20/02/2023 17:46

Far better than some trendy Chavvy crap names !

Bluelightbaby · 20/02/2023 17:51

Those names and other traditional names are very popular in my area

magicthree · 20/02/2023 18:10

Frankly, your "friends" sound horrible - not to mention totally out of touch with what people are calling their children these days.

Ignore them.

Sennelier1 · 20/02/2023 19:28

You don't need new names but new friends.

Manthide · 20/02/2023 19:31

Lovely names. Dd1 is a gynaecologist and some of the names she hears - well there should be laws to protect innocent babies - Snowdrop ( a boy) anyone?

BeeBB · 20/02/2023 19:36

Ignore your friends I love the name Arthur and also like Albert or Albie. I wasn’t sure about Edith at first but its growing on me.

I dread to think what your friends children are called OP.

Manthide · 20/02/2023 19:37

I wasn't a great fan of the name dd2 chose for her little boy but now I couldn't imagine him being called anything else. And it wasn't something as classic as Arthur. I like Edie more than Edith but I think it is a normal name that no one will blink an eyelid at. One of my dd's has always hated her name and I was pressurised into giving it to her but I think she is grateful everyone can say and spell it (Mary).

Soph2990 · 20/02/2023 19:38

I have an Edith, she's 6, people have always loved her name! When they start school at 4 and introduce themselves as Edith the other 4 year olds just accept it 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷‍♀️ they don't think it's an old person name!

I also have a 1 year old Agnes - if you really want to divide opinion and shock people you should go with that 🤣

Hedjwitch · 20/02/2023 19:38

Love Edith. Its gorgeous

tasht333 · 20/02/2023 19:40

Love the names. I'd like Edie for short too!

Your friends are the problem, not your name choices.

isthisit83 · 20/02/2023 19:42

OMG. These were our two choices! We had a boy and he's called Arthur. Your friends are wrong. Arthur has gone into the top 10. It's really popular and I hear it a lot now amongst young children. It's also my dads name :)

Sexypyjamas · 20/02/2023 19:42

Love those names. I agree with Edie being nice.
They don't sound like friends to me x

Pixie2015 · 20/02/2023 19:44

Know a lot of Arthurs and a few Edith’s think they have become popular

Barannca · 20/02/2023 19:46

Do your friends have any children? There are several Arthurs and a couple of Ediths at my GCs school. They won't stand out at all.
OP name your baby what you want and if you have another child don't tell anyone what you plan to call him/her because people will always have an opinion but probably won't say anything once the child has been named

LexMitior · 20/02/2023 19:49

Your friend is called what exactly?

Anyway, the names are fine.

Crumpetdisappointment · 20/02/2023 19:51

they are lovely names.
really on trend, well at least arthur is.

MrsRonaldWeasley · 20/02/2023 19:52

I love both these names. I think your friends are very rude.

Sleepyteach · 20/02/2023 20:25

DD is Edith and one of her classmates is Arthur. Both lovely names and completely suit the kids. Never had any negative comments about DDs name. I like that it’s popular but not too popular. Your friends sound like shits.

Nimmykins · 20/02/2023 20:51

I know a 7-year-old Arthur.

People laughed at my daughter’s name. She’s named after my grandma and my husband’s great aunt. Two loved and missed people. It is a uncommon old lady name and those who laughed are not worth knowing. Same goes for those who laugh at your fabulous names.

Karmacat · 20/02/2023 21:09

These names are lovely. I know an Arthur, Edie, Mabel, and Stanley all great teenagers now, and all love their names. They are strong and timeless, don't listen to anyone else!
