Lachlan...in England

CatLoaf · 20/02/2023 09:09

I would pronounce Lach-lan, with the chh at the back of the throat like in Loch, as I am Scottish. However, we're in south England, would everyone just be saying Lock-lan?

Yes. Sorry. Can you live with that?

CatOnTheChair · 20/02/2023 09:15

I read it the way you would pronounce it. But I think many wouldn't.
Surely Lochlann would be the "lock" way

TiaI · 20/02/2023 09:16

Beautiful name

Choconut · 20/02/2023 09:16

Actually if I just saw it written I would pronounce it Lack-lan - sorry! But if I heard someone else say it then I would say Lock-lan, I wouldn't do the back of the throat thing as I'd think it would sound like I was taking the piss or something. I think it's a lovely name though however it is pronounced and also looks very nice written down.

No. I’m in England and definitely pronounce it your way - I’m sure most people know how to say it. I only know one but his name is said your way too.

KirstenBlest · 20/02/2023 09:58

He'll be Lacklun to most.

Thingsthatgo · 20/02/2023 10:49

I know a Lachlan in England, who pronounces it the Scottish way, but gets Lochlan a lot. (Is it pronounced Lochlan in Ireland, maybe? And Australia and also maybe America?)

WhisperingAutistic · 20/02/2023 10:58

I cannot make that sound that you describe. I'd end up saying it as Lock Lan

ShellsPebbles · 20/02/2023 11:50

I would say Lock-Lan, I quite like the name. People will get used to the way you choose to pronounce it.

Nonibaloni · 20/02/2023 11:54

Well my Lachlan born and raised in Scotland, by Scottish parents calls himself Lacklan with a hard ck. his friends call him Lackers. So I’m fairly immune to other people getting it wrong. The issue we have (which isn’t really an issue) is everyone assumes it’s got a tricky Gaelic spelling.

xprincessxjanetx · 21/02/2023 00:36

Unless you're in Scotland I assume it would be constantly pronounced with the hard "k" sound.

evemillbank · 21/02/2023 00:52

As I have small children I'd just automatically pronounce it the said way as Lachlan from The Wiggles does.

user1492757084 · 21/02/2023 02:22

he would be a very handsome Lock-lan or Locky. A great name.

tabulahrasa · 21/02/2023 03:03

It being an o written as an a shouldn’t cause a huge issue as most people have come across it somewhere and those that haven’t can be told that.... but most English people just can’t say ch properly.

garlictwist · 21/02/2023 04:23

They will pronounce it in their accent just like any other name. It's not wrong, just different. My name is Hannah but you wouldn't know it as where I live everyone pronounces it Anna.
