What do you think of when you think of Cecily

My first thought is that Cecily was medieval princess
daughter of William of Normandy and sister-in-law to Henry VII

when I think of Cecily I think of medieval times, of medieval tapestries and medieval English field with sunshine on it

second thing I think of is Saint Cecilia, the patron of musicians, but not because I'm religious, but because it's so rare name where I'm from

I also think of meaning "blind" I think of Saint Lucia (common Saint where I'm from) holding the plater with her eyes - this was iconographic when I was a kid, my gradma had some portrait in such manner.

another thing I think of is that ceci is chickpea in Italy... they got calling chickpea chocolate cookies Cecile.

What do you think of when you think of Cecily or Cecilia?

I think medieval, Cecile Neville, then a jump to Importance of Being Earnest. Slightly posh but classic, uncommon and very usable. It was very high on my list, but I did find it a bit lispy -all those S sounds.

schoolsoutforever · 17/02/2023 15:44

I like it a lot. I think of Medieval women or women of the 190s-20s (no idea why). I like Cecily better than Cecilia.

HerbalTeaAndCake · 17/02/2023 15:46

Prefer Cecelia

DappledThings · 17/02/2023 15:49

I think of Cecily Neville first too. And then that DH vetoed it. DD ended up with the name of an Emperess though so I guess a step up in seniority!

daverday · 17/02/2023 16:00

Dame Cecly Saunders the founder of the modern hospice (Slightly different spelling)

daverday · 17/02/2023 16:01

Cicely Saunders even!

Pemba · 17/02/2023 16:09

Cecily Parsley lived in a pen
And brewed good ale for gentlemen
Gentlemen came every day
Til Cecilly Parsley went away

(or something like that!)

It's a nursery rhyme in a Beatrix Potter book, one of my first books as a child. Think Cecily was a rabbit. Grin

Or yes, Cecilly Neville, mother of King Edward IV. Seems a bit mediaeval as a pp said. Pretty though. Either medieval or Victorian.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 17/02/2023 16:11

My very lovely neighbour, and Cecily Neville, and Cicely, Alaska (because what’s an i or e between friends?)

WinterFoxes · 17/02/2023 16:11

Importance of Being Earnest.

I'm not keen on it. Don't like the 'silly' sound at the end.

Paturday · 17/02/2023 16:12

Very wet

Stropalotopus83 · 17/02/2023 16:17

Ahh, I love the name Cecily. I had a best friend at primary school called Cecily and she was lovely. Unfortunately her family moved to the Shetland Islands (from Wales) when we were about 7 and I never saw or heard from her again. Still remember her fondly though!

Whatdayisitalexa · 17/02/2023 16:18

Cecilia Cecily Celia all lovely sounding names...no bad connotations from me..all due a 'comeback' if that's 'a thing' your child your choice...if you like it they will own it..others may copy and it may start trending 😉

TheLastDreamOfTheOak · 17/02/2023 16:21

Tudor times. I like it

CrabDuckDuckCrab · 17/02/2023 16:24

I think of the aunt in Alison Uttley's book, 'A Traveller in Time'.

Then I think about it too much and start seeing it as an adjective - as in, having the qualities of a cecil - and have to go away and think about something else for a bit.

I read the name Cicely on another book as a child (think it was the author or the illustrator). Never hearing anyone say it out loud I used to think Cicely rhymed with nicely! Logical I suppose...

isn't she called Tissie?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 17/02/2023 16:27

or does the Tissie come from Cecily? I must re-read that book.

LadyMargaretDevereux · 17/02/2023 16:34

The Importance of Being Earnest, as pp have said - but I love the name as well, I don't mean that as a criticism. 'Cecilia...you're breaking my heart, you're shaking my confidence daily...' but that's because I'm old.

Whatdayisitalexa · 17/02/2023 16:38

I've only known 2 Celia's irl (59 years) other than the Simon and Garfunkel song..thinking that was Cecelia? There will always be people on here who will associate a name with someone who bullied them etc and will dislike it for that reason alone...I suspect in 20 years time the name of the person who bullied them will be be one of the top 50 names something -mae -Rose - etc etc. Calling your kid Myra seems to be a definite NO! Rose could be a bit iffy for similar reasons imho but it doesn't seem to stop anyone despite it being more recent history..there's not much rhyme or reasoning, asking strangers is asking for their issues imho

Lovemusic33 · 17/02/2023 16:44

I knew a Cecily when dd was little (school friend) she has tight curly blonde hair, was full of energy and a little naughty. I think it’s a lovely strong name.

I too used to think Cicely rhymed with nicely. I was most disappointed to discover the true pronunciation. I thought Cecily and Cicely were very different, not actually quite similar in sound.

Twelve8Ts · 17/02/2023 16:51

I prefer Cicely, which I think is beautiful. There was a suffragist, Cicely Hamilton, so I think of it as a strong name 😊

carkerpartridge · 17/02/2023 16:54

Wet and drippy, would catch a chill if she went outside

I heard it before I read it, and thought it was Sicily as a name. Like India or Georgia.

HairyToity · 17/02/2023 17:03

A very posh girl I used to know. I'm a simpleton and just find it a frilly name like Felicity and Arabella.
