Hazel is the nicest. Fern and Madeleine are fine. Demelza Winnie and Nellie are dire.

PurpleReindeer2 · 16/02/2023 19:42

Like Hazel and would go for Helen nn Nell. Sorry, not keen at all on your other choices.

mathanxiety · 16/02/2023 19:51

All gorgeous except Fern.

FuchsAndMöhr · 16/02/2023 19:53

Demelza makes me think of a witch, I’m not sure why 🧙‍♀️

I love Nelly 💞

ourflagmeansdeath · 16/02/2023 20:27

Madeline - I lLOVE Madeleine, it's really pretty. Not so much Madeline.
Hazel - Really, really pretty but think it's going to be very popular soon.
Frida - Not for me sorry, seems a bit old lady like.
Nell/Nelly - Lovely as a nickname for Eleanor. I know one, and she's an angel.
Fern - I do like this, but it's just a bit meh. Not much going on.
Demelza - No, please no. Really dislike it. At a stretch, go for it with NN Mel.
Winnie - I think this is super cute with a fuller name.
Nancy - No, I'm sorry too old ladylike for me, I put it with Barbara.

I love Hazel and Madeline (Madeleine) the most!!!

AuntieStella · 16/02/2023 20:32

Madeline - like, but there's more than one way of spelling that I'd find a PIT, so wouldn't saddle someone else with
Hazel - doesn't do it for me, sorry
Frida - OK, but spelling issue again
Nell/Nelly - like, but I see it as a nn, not stand alone
Fern - OK
Demelza - quite like
Winnie - bit of a nn ( but long forms are a bit dire)
Nancy - ok

17caterpillars1mouse · 16/02/2023 21:37

Madeline - I really like it. I like reading the book to my DD. I don't know any little Madeline's but do know a few Madeleine'd, a Madelyn and a few Maddie's all under 8

Hazel - pretty. I only know one who is two.

Frida - I really like it, different and strong sounding

Nell/Nelly - Nell is nice. I know one short for Eleanor. I'm not as keen on Nellie (I also know one - short for Penelope)

Fern - ok, not my style. I know two young Fearne's

Demelza - awful

Winnie - cute, but I only like as a nickname for either Winter or Winnifred

Nancy - I know loads! All under 4. I'm not a fan personally

Madeline - LOADS about!
Hazel - beautiful
Frida - abba
Nell/Nelly - like

Fern - ok
Demelza - witch
Winnie - Mandela
Nancy - Oliver Twist, love it

Must depend on which area - I have a Madeleine and have only met one other child with that name. Have never met a Madeline with that spelling. She is the only Madeleine in her school (400 children) and her dance teacher said she’s never taught any others with that name

WhisperingAutistic · 16/02/2023 21:57

Madeline - I prefer Madeleine but I really like the name
Hazel - Another lovely, underused name
Frida - I'm not a fan. Sounds harsh to my ear
Nell/Nelly - Reminds me of Nellie the elephant
Fern - Quite nice! Prefer it to Fearne
Demelza - I've never heard of this name. Sounds like one of the ugly sisters in Cinderella
Winnie - The big yellow bear who eats honey
Nancy - Not a fan

Twoshoesnewshoes · 16/02/2023 22:02

Madeleine, Hazel or Nancy

Mumofgirls2017 · 16/02/2023 22:04

Madeline- like, but wary of assoc with McCann
Hazel- like
Frida- I like it but know many won’t!
Nell/Nelly- like if short for Penelope or Eleanor

Fern- no, find it dated
Demelza- no
Winnie- short for winter or Winifred? Ok
Nancy- like

DramaAlpaca · 16/02/2023 22:07

Nice - Madeline, Fern, Hazel, Demelza

Not nice - Frida, Nell/Nelly, Winnie, Nancy

evemillbank · 16/02/2023 22:36

Oh I don't like any of them. I usually like a couple at least!

@Angelmonkey 2 in my daughters close friendship group and literally dozens in the school 🤣

TheBirdintheCave · 16/02/2023 22:40

Demelza is a gorgeous Cornish name. I'm surprised more people haven't heard of it after the success of the Poldark tv series.

Hazel is another fav of mine :)

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 16/02/2023 22:45

@TheBirdintheCave not surprised it’s Cornish actually, that makes sense and sounds quite Celt/pagan, don’t know many Cornish names.

I would quite like it - though we have a Demelza children’s hospice locally so reminds me of that.

TempsPerdu · 16/02/2023 23:12

An interesting list OP! Personally I’d narrow it down to Hazel, Frida, Fern and Nancy.

Madeline - OK, a little dull and I dislike Maddy as a nickname (the one I know gets Madz, which imo is even worse!) Prefer Madeleine spelling.

Hazel - lovely. Nice warm, earthy vibe and nature/colour associations.

Frida - love this. Strong, feisty and unfrilly, for me it has a cool Scandi vibe

Nell/Nelly - not keen. Feels too nicknamey and vaguely comical (Nelly the Elephant; ‘not on your nelly’ etc).

Fern - like; simple and fresh and botanical sounding (as opposed to a twee flower name)

Demelza - no, I get a witchy/Ugly Sister vibe to this, along the same lines as Griselda. Very clunky sounding.

Winnie - cute on a toddler but I couldn’t take an adult Winnie seriously. Would only work for me if you could skip straight from sweet preschooler to sweet elderly lady and leave out the middle part!

Nancy - very nice; has a lively, happy vibe and lots of good namesakes.

ShillyShallySherbet · 16/02/2023 23:16

I like:
Madeline
Nell/Nelly
Fern
Demelza
Nancy

Not so keen on:
Frida
Winnie

I love:
Hazel

Coxspurplepippin · 16/02/2023 23:18

Eleanor nn Nell
Hazel
Winifred nn Freda or Winnie

Not keen on the rest.

dontdoiiiit · 16/02/2023 23:20

Oh God, There was a girl with the name Demelza in my high school. Always a bit loud, I've been away for years, she now has kids at my sons new primary, I only realised when I heard her screeching after her kids, every day she's the attention seeking Mum with no insight into how she actually comes across 😬

Anyway!

Nell is lovely!

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 16/02/2023 23:20

Madeline - I like it but it’s very popular
Hazel - love it
Frida - ok
Nell/Nelly - lovely

Fern - pretty
Demelza - dreadful
Winnie - cute
Nancy - dull

Pemba · 17/02/2023 02:00

Madeline is the only one I really like, it's lovely.

Nell would be nice when short for Helen/Helena/Eleanor or maybe Penelope. Not as a stand-alone name.

Kentlassie · 17/02/2023 04:51

Madeline is the only one I like. Demelza is the name of a childrens’ hospice where we live.

schoolsoutforever · 17/02/2023 16:03

Madeline- like the name but a bit popular (which may not be an issue). Don’t like Maddie
Hazel - really nice
Frida - quite nice
Nell/Nelly - not my fav

Fern - really nice
Demelza I quite like it but don’t like Demi as a nn.
Winnie - not a big fan
Nancy - OK

Lion1618 · 17/02/2023 19:45

Madeline - like. It's a pretty name and I think Maddie ia a cool nickname.
Hazel - it's ok. Not a huge fan of the sound of it but I can see why others like it.
Frida - dislike.
Nell/Nelly - like both of these. Nell is a great name for all ages with the potential of Nelly as a cute nickname for a little one.
Fern - LOVE it. It was one of my top girl names for baby #3. It's got the nature/botanical vibe without being too frilly, cutesy or popular.
Demelza - dislike. Sounds awful and witchy to me.
Winnie - like.
Nancy - it's ok.
