What is everyone’s opinions on Katrine as a name.

It is a very beautiful loch in Scotland (DH is Scottish, I’m English). Sir Walter Scott used it to write his lady of the lake poem. But it is also a ‘proper’ name in its own right, which I know is important for mners.

It is pronounced Catrin (which is the Welsh version of the name). Would you pronounce Katrine this way.

Do you like it, love it or loath it?

It’s hard to describe how you say the ch in loch - it’s a bit like keeping your throat open when when you say the ch like you’re about to gargle, as opposed to closing it to pronounce an ock sound.

Beautiful, and a known name in Scotland. It does not rhyme with latrine, despite a previous poster’s comment

I think most people who are mentioning latrine are using it as an example of how they might pronounce Katrine having come across it for the first time, not that they think she would be teased or bullied for having a name that sounds like latrine. It's not a word that many children would be familiar with at all.

The ch in loch isn’t hard like lock. I don’t know what the word for it is but it’s almost from the throat.

That link is great but if I say it like that is sounds like I am taking the piss out of the accent.

I don't have a hard ck in lock. I do find accent fascinating.

How does Anna rhyme with banana?

because in my accent the last two syllables of banana are nah-nuh and Anna is ah-nuh, it might be different in yours of course.

@TheOriginalEmu sorry didn't tag, I'm really interested, I can hear the difference

I also thought "Latrine", I'm afraid.

I thought you were going to ask for suggestions, and was going to say Vanessa (Ness), which is a lovely name.

SunonmyFace · 14/02/2023 20:58

I know a Katrine, named for Loch Katrine, sister to Kerry ( as in County), names reflecting the their Scottish / Irish parentage ( and in their 20’s now!)
never queried the pronunciation as it is Katrine, like the Loch …

SunonmyFace · 14/02/2023 20:59

..I also know a Garry as in Loch too, also Scottish, it is a thing

BlueLabel · 14/02/2023 21:02

I'd pronounce it as Katrin, but then I'm familiar with Loch Katrine. It's a lovely name.

Being Danish Katrine is a well known name. For me I would say KaTri NUh. However I am aware that this is unlikely in English speaking countries so I would follow the lead of the person. And say like they introduce themselves l.

It's a beautiful name. People get past their ideas. Like you often see violent being used here when Violet is suggested yet Violet is fairly popular so it doesn't put people off.

I did not think Latrine
