It's a thorny issue

VenturaMabel · 05/02/2023 00:33

Makes me think of barbed wire

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 05/02/2023 04:12

Repeating what's been already said but in Ireland it's shorthand for a cranky pain in the arse.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/02/2023 04:16

I love it

It's a thorny issue

Imagine how many times they would hear this in their life!

Roseyposeypudding · 05/02/2023 05:10

I love it! To me it got a bohemian vibe. It’s the name of Rachel Bilson’s daughter and she’s cool.

OnlyTheWeedsGrow · 05/02/2023 05:10

My immediate thought was the story of Brer Rabbit and the Briar Patch….

stclair · 05/02/2023 05:17

I know an old lady Briar. I really like it.

SilentNightDancer · 05/02/2023 06:39

I quite like it. I think it fits the trend for nature names quite well.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 05/02/2023 06:46

Might as well name her Cactus

Holly is also a thorny plant but it's a hugely popular name

Yes but Holly, although spiky, is also beautiful, brings colour into the drab winter days and has lovely berries.

Briars are not spiked leaves but tangled thickets of spikes without any real redeeming features. The connotations are not good, and the sound of the word is quite harsh.

Wagsandclaws · 05/02/2023 08:13

Dornroschen ( sorry I can't work out how to do
The umlaut above the 'o' ) was a prettified version by the brothers Grimm of an Italian fairytale called 'sun, moon and Talia' by Giambattista Basile in the 16th century.

The Italian original version was as the pp has said but it isn't the story that the Grimm brothers re-wrote.

I think Briar - Rose is beautiful fwiw, Briar on its own sounds like a nature name ( Rowan, Juniper etc ) and I think it's quite pretty too.

The connotations of being grumpy from Ireland won't be made so much here ( unless you are Irish ) so use it if it makes you happy.

pictoosh · 05/02/2023 08:17

I like it.
You're wrong to think a briar is a flower, as someone else pointed out...the flower that you linked to is a rose.
But I think Briar serves well as a name.

Blahburst · 05/02/2023 08:22

Briars are thorns. It reminds you of a rose but that’s not the immediate image for most people. I wouldn’t personally but it’s your baby and it’s close enough to a name to get away with if you are set on it.

AggieTop · 05/02/2023 08:23

I know at least three girls called Bryher but we live in Cornwall and it's quite popular here due to Isles of Scilly connection.

cunderthunt1 · 05/02/2023 08:25

GrazingSheep · 04/02/2023 23:18

Would you want to be called Briar?

Lol

TempsPerdu · 05/02/2023 08:33

I really like Briar, and its spikiness is part of what appeals to me. Also like the Bryher spelling, as in the island.

Incidentally, I always find it amusing when someone asks for thoughts on a girl’s name that they’re clearly attracted to because it sounds strong and not too frilly/girly, and then posters come on and say ‘Oh no, what about… (insert much frillier/girlier alternative here). On this thread it’s been ‘What about Bria/Brianna?’, and I’ve also seen it a lot for Rowan (‘Why not use Rowena/Rowenna?’). I just don’t see why girls’ names need to be ‘pretty’!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/02/2023 08:36

I know its spelt differently but I think of a rabbit!

Kissmycousinkate · 05/02/2023 08:39

What about Bryher, like the island?

LabradorEyes · 05/02/2023 08:41

Does it rhyme with "liar"?

Wonnle · 05/02/2023 08:42

If she has a sister you could call her Bramble !

PetitPorpoise · 05/02/2023 08:44

I think she would spend her life with people saying "Sorry, did you say your name was Brian?"

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 05/02/2023 08:47

Bryony is lovely. I wanted it but dh wouldn't I also love holly.

WimpoleHat · 05/02/2023 08:50

“What - your name’s Brian?”. She’ll hear that every day. I really wouldn’t. Briony, on the other hand, is a perfectly reasonable name.

JennyDarlingRIP · 05/02/2023 08:56

She will definitely get called Brian
