There was a little Hamilton at IKEA this afternoon. I reeeeeeeally wanted to ask the parents about it as I am a name geek but I realise that would probably be weird - and a heaving IKEA is probably not the place 😄 he was full-named but I was wondering what a shortening of that might be. Milton! Wish I caught what his sister was called.

I am a huge fan of the musical, but really don’t think it’s a great choice for a name! It sounds like what you’d name a pig…

CherryAndCreamCake · 29/01/2023 17:38

God no! It's my brother in laws surname! Oh, what has become of the English 😂. Graysons, Jacksons, Harrisons all over the place and now this? Please make it stop. What's next, Smith? Smith Smith.

It's a fine, very old surname but it makes for a silly, wth first name.

Nope nn ham? No thanks

The thought did cross my mind tbh. He looked quite adorable and I’m sure they’re lovely though!

Tony. Really hope he decides to call himself Tony.

Hopefully his sister is called Angelica. Or Lanark.

Makes me think of my 2 year olds current favourite book "Hamilton's Hats" which is about a pig!
And also the town in Scotland! Maybe it was where h was conceived? 🤔

ThomasinaLivesHere · 29/01/2023 20:45

Nickname would be Ham or Hamy 😂

I don’t mind surname as first names. I just don’t think this is a good one.

Eastereggsboxedupready · 29/01/2023 20:50

I went to school with a Hamilton.. Went by Hammy..
He was a nerd!

If you do have the name in your ancestry then use it.
It has long been used as a first name, though it's quite rare.

Hamilton Hume was born in 1797 and, as an early settler, he explored and mapped parts of New South Wales, at first with help from a local aborigine called Johny. The Hume Highway is after Hamilton Hume who was named after his father, Andrew Hamilton Hume.

I'm putting money on his sister being Paisley 😁

TheFlis12345 · 31/01/2023 10:20

I knew a Hamilton at uni, he was just Ham
for short. In hindsight it’s a bit weird but it kinda suited him so I didn’t think much about it at the time.

I know a young man called Hamilton. He is very much an individual, popular, quirky and good natured. It really suits him and he is someone you never forget. I love the name.

ThisIsTrifficult · 31/01/2023 10:47

Hamilton was my grandad's middle name. Scottish thing of giving mum's maiden name as middle name.
Had we a boy, it would have been his middle name. Wouldn't have gone first name though.

Rauha · 31/01/2023 10:51

I don't like Hamilton as a first name but I love your username OP. Paturday 😁

TrashyPanda · 31/01/2023 12:46

I’ve known two Hamilton’s.

one went by Hammie, the other was Milton.

ApolloandDaphne · 31/01/2023 12:53

I know a Hamilton. They are a very musical family so I'm guessing it might be related to the musical of the same name. It really suits the little lad.
