Same name as cousin?

Wanted to get everyone’s thoughts on if I’m reading too much into things or if it’s ok! We have narrowed our list down to 3 names…but my favourite name could cause some issues!

It’s the same same as my SILs nephew. I have two little nieces and nephews and they have two cousins - one of which has the same name that I like.

Is it weird to give the same name as my niece and nephew will have two cousins from different sides with the same name?

No, I don’t think that’s weird - particularly if the child with the same name is not related to your child.

The question is, if you don’t go with your favourite name, would you always regret it? If so, go for it.

I wouldn’t give them the same name as their cousin, but cousin’s cousin is fine!

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 28/01/2023 21:20

your SIL's nephew won't be your child's cousin though? And your niece and nephew's cousin also has this name? But would he be your child's cousin?

I'm confused Grin

But if your son would have a cousin on each side with the same first name as him it's not a massive deal of course, but it does indicate the name is maybe already over used in a wider sense.

It's fine. They just get called "Big Ben" and "little Ben" or "our Maggie" and "your maggie"

I know that my sibling's in laws have the same top name choice as us. Honestly it wouldn't stop me from using the name. I haven't seen my sibling's in-law for four years and have never met their partner and wouldn't let their name choices affect mine .My husband and I agree on so few names that I'm not going to consider name choices of people I barely know. I have cousins on opposite sides of my family with the boy and girl version of the same name and it's not been an issue so if it end up that my sibling's children have cousins with the same name, I'm sure they'll cope with it with the same strategies they'd employ for knowing any other people with the same name.

😂 Sorry I realise it’s so confusing!! But basically it’ll be my niece/nephew having two cousins (from different sides of the family) with the same name!

I wouldn’t

Thank you so much, it’s pretty much the identical situation for us! I’ve never met them either!

My kids are in exactly this situation - twice over, as DH’s sister used the names of both my sister’s boys - Alexander and Christopher- for two of hers. Incidentally, they also have two Uncles with the same name, as my brother and SIL’s husband are both called Andrew
It hasn’t really caused any problems, as it’s usually obvious from the context which one is being talked about.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/01/2023 21:30

Absolutely fine

Thank you that’s really reassuring!

I don't even know the names of half my cousins' cousins. I have a lot of cousins, and they have a lot of cousins. If I asked them to tell me all their cousins' names, so I could avoid using them, I'm not sure there'd be many names left!
I've never heard of anyone worrying about this OP.

Krakenes · 28/01/2023 21:35

If you would be fine with the situation if it was the opposite way round, then go for it! Personally I wouldn’t even think this was an issue at all as you’ll barely see them by the sounds of things. Unless it’s a ridiculously unique name, then I don’t think it will be an issue.

jannier · 28/01/2023 21:43

My son has the same name as my cousin he's 31 now never been an issue or mentioned....my sil to be will have the same name too should my daughter have said no I can't marry someone with my brother's name?

Underhisi · 28/01/2023 21:47

It's fine. I don't even know the names of my cousin's cousins.

Blog34 · 29/01/2023 23:43

I have two cousins with the same name (different sides of the family). Really not a problem.
