Like Ivor, Everett is ok

xprincessxjanetx · 26/01/2023 22:05

I would pronounce Ivor as Eye-vuh rather than Eye-vor

Everett is ok

ALS94 · 26/01/2023 22:07

I’d pronounce it eye-vor (southern England)
Not so keen on Emrys
I like Everett

DestinysGrandchild · 26/01/2023 22:08

I like Emrys

Rauha · 26/01/2023 22:08

Ivor is my favourite (my accent pronounces it as eye-vur).

Hoolihan · 26/01/2023 22:09

Ivor is cute, not familiar with Emrys and wouldn't know how to pronounce it - are you Welsh?

Everett is a surname.

cravingtoblerone · 26/01/2023 22:27

Love Ivor - was on my list but DH strongly vetoed...

Twoinapod · 27/01/2023 00:07

I love love love Emrys, in my top 2 boys names, if I’m ever lucky enough to have a boy it’ll either be first or middle name.

Ivor I would say eye-vor, but I’m not a fan. I just think of old welsh farmers.

Im not big on surnames as names so Everett doesn’t appeal at all

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/01/2023 09:20

Ivor is ok - eye-ver
Ivo (eye-voh) is nicer I think

Really don’t like the other too

MassiveSalad22 · 27/01/2023 09:21

I would pronounce Ivor EYE-vuh.
I like Everett
Not keen on Emrys personally

KirstenBlest · 27/01/2023 10:24

Ivor is usually Eye-vore. Ifor is YV-orr (Yv like in Yvette, -orr like in lorry, stress is on the first syllable)
Emrys is EM-riss
Everett - don't like it as a first name

stormelf · 27/01/2023 10:27

I love emrys. I'd DD had been a boy that was the name we chose

KirstenBlest · 27/01/2023 10:36

@17caterpillars1mouse , I added Ifor because some old welsh farmers are called Ivor but say it as Ifor. Not keen on Ivor but Ifor is great.
I know an Ivo but he says it as Evo

user1492757084 · 27/01/2023 12:48

Ivor is smart - EYE-vuh - 9/10
Everett - a bit complex/fussy - 5/10
Emrys - 8/10

postwarbulge · 27/01/2023 13:18

Eye-for? I like it, as it reminds me of a cartoon shunting engine that wanted to join the choir.

postwarbulge · 27/01/2023 13:19

I suppose with any name, its appeal depends in its associations

Riverlee · 27/01/2023 13:20

Love all three names. Welsh connection?

Riverlee · 27/01/2023 13:20

Can I add Emlyn to the mix?

FlounderingFruitcake · 27/01/2023 13:30

Ivor is great, Eye-Vuh would be how I’d pronounce it but I’d happily be corrected!

Everett is also nice.

I haven’t heard of Emrys before, I’m guessing it’s Welsh (?) and if it weren’t for the fact that you’ve said boys names and without any further context, I would have assumed it’s a girls name because it seems like a mash up of Emma and Cerys.

KirstenBlest · 27/01/2023 13:51

@FlounderingFruitcake , Emrys is the Welsh form of Ambrose.

Emlyn is nice but unless you are old enough to remember Emlyn Hughes, you probably might think it's too similar to Emily and Emmeline

FlounderingFruitcake · 27/01/2023 14:02

Thanks for the explanation! Sorry if I offended anyone by saying it sounded like a girls name, DH and I both have French family and we ruled out more than a few French boy’s names because they sounded like girl’s names in English so maybe that’s been on my mind more than usual. I still stand my Ivor is awesome and should be OP’s pick though!

KirstenBlest · 27/01/2023 14:24

You could say that Yves, Michel and Jean might sound or look like girl's names. I think that Etienne has been suggested as a girl's name on here more than once, before someone pointed out that it was like calling a girl Stephen.

It would be a bit strange to mash up Emma and Cerys, one being of German origin and the other Welsh, but I'm sure some pretty new names could be formed by doing something like that

FlounderingFruitcake · 27/01/2023 15:48

You could say that Yves, Michel and Jean might sound or look like girl's names.
Yes that’s exactly my point!

KirstenBlest · 27/01/2023 16:42

I've worked with a Michel. Many colleagues wrote his name as Michelle. Fortunately there was no Michelle working there. For some reason, I always need to remind myself that Jean Seberg wasn't a frenchman.
