Odilia/Ophira?

What do you think of these names for girls? Odilia is a saint name, Ophira comes from the biblical place Ophir (thought to be India) and is popular in Israel without the ‘a’ at the end.

Honestly ? Hideous

KirstenBlest · 23/01/2023 09:00

Odilia makes me think of Odious, and it will get misheard as Olivia, Ottilia or Ophelia, or Odile (Odette's sister in Swan Lake)

Does Ophira has no appeal for me.

CastleTower · 23/01/2023 09:03

These are a bit frilly for my taste in any case. But they also feel a bit like they're unusual for the sake of being unusual, if you see what I mean.

Ophelia, Ottilie, Odile, Odette or Olivia would all be nicer (though none are to my taste).

Octavia and Orla would be nicer O names, for me personally - but perhaps they're not what you want.

I really like Ophira, unusual but not bizarre.
Odillia is a but twiddly for me.

I love Saint Odilia but I can’t fully love the name unfortunately. I swing between liking it and being not at all keen. I think I want to like it more than I actually do!

I think Ophira is unusual and pretty so glad someone else agrees - even if just one person! Haha. I like that is has a strong biblical background and is the biblical place name for India - have Indian family so a nice link to our background too.

I quite like Odira which has surprised me.

Odilia feels too frilly. I'd go for Odile instead.

Passerillage · 23/01/2023 10:27

I prefer Ophira of the two, but Odile is also lovely and maybe more elegant (less twiddly!) than Odilia.

It reminds me of the lovely looking Gin bottle. How is it pronounced?

Rickandmortified100 · 23/01/2023 14:35

I am a gin fan so that seems fitting 😁 Its pronounced like O-feer-uh with the first syllable the same sort of ‘o’ as Olivia or Ottilie. Sorry, I’m horrible at describing pronunciation!

Does it fit your religion and background? Because I do think that choosing an exotic name that you have no obvious connection to will only raise questions, and people don't always want to be asked questions about their name. I know a few examples where the name is so out of place with the person that people always ask. Not funny if you're the one growing up with the out of place name keeping explaining yourself. I hope she changed it.

Yes, of course! That’s literally what I like about the names.

(I’m speaking about Ophira now - I’ve knocked Odilia off the list)
