Registering baby's name

Helping a relative who is about to register their baby's name. She is not married but in a long term happy relationship with the father.

They have decided on first name and second name, and also know they want the child to use the father's surname. It's a lovely sounding name too, if that makes a difference - three syllables, so not particularly short.

They were wondering whether to add the mother's surname in the mix too. But they don't want a double barrel name as it will be too long (both surnames are longish, and together feel tricky to spell- the child would spend their life spelling it down phones!). But it might be nice to have both, and also mother's surname somewhere in there since they are not married (although I know it probably doesn't make a difference, legally, since of course there's a birth certificate etc).

Could the mother's surname appear as a third name? So not be part of the "surname" ? If that makes sense. I am not sure I am explaining it correctly. Thank you all!

You can have it as another middle name. My eldest has my maiden name as a middle name.

Needmorelego · 21/01/2023 10:23

I put my surname as a middle name (so she has 2 middle names).

My children have my maiden name as a second middle name. So they're
First name Middlename Myname Surname

The mother's surname could be a middle name?

imeanwhy · 21/01/2023 10:25

Thank you! I wasn't sure a surname could become a middle name. Sounds like a great option though. So the child can only use it if they choose/want to...

@AnnoyedByAlfieBear thank you, yes they might go for a similar thing to you. I just spoke to them and they like the idea. So to clarify, for your DS then, the passport says:

Name: firstname middlename yoursurname
Surname: fatherssurname

?

Yes sure. It’s common to use the mothers surname as a middle name.

Yes. That's exactly what it says.

So (fake names used)...
FIRST NAME(S): Susan Emma Smith
SURNAME: Jones

I know lots of people with a surname as a middle name.
Something like Emma Louise Fraser Robinson

imeanwhy · 21/01/2023 10:44

Oh that's perfect! Thanks everyone. Sorry sounds silly but I don't know anybody that's done it (or perhaps I don't know everyone's full legal name ha)

@AnnoyedByAlfieBear thank you so much

I have my Mother's maiden name as middle name. This is pretty common in Scotland.
