Heidi is the only one I really like.

And I hate Maeve...

everythingsapickle · 20/01/2023 23:22

Like Maeve and Erin
Penelope is OK, but not keen on Penny
Dislike Heidi and Astrid

frayble · 21/01/2023 11:41

In ranked order

  • Maeve - really like, this was on my list too!
  • Heidi - recognisable but not common
  • Erin - nice enough but quite plain
  • Penelope - really dislike, sounds a bit wet and despise Penny
  • Astrid - really dislike - sounds like a mispronunciation of asteroid

I would go with Maeve

Catswhisky · 21/01/2023 11:47

Penelope / Penny - like a lot
Heidi - like

Erin - boring and overused
Maeve - also boring and overused

Astrid - hate it

BungleandGeorge · 21/01/2023 11:55

Penelope- good. Not keen on penny but you could shorten to Nel
Heidi- no. Just doesn’t work on an adult for me
Maeve- ok. It makes me think of a dowdy elderly female called Mavis shortened to Mave though
Erin- good.
Astrid- no. I like the name but don’t think it works that well in English. A bit pretentious

CoffeeChocolateWine · 21/01/2023 12:06

Love...
Penelope/Penny (my sister's name)
Erin (I wanted this for my DD but DH vetoed)
Astrid

Like...
Heidi

Dislike...
Maeve (very frumpy)

LlynTegid · 21/01/2023 12:07

Don't like Penelope, Maeve probably one a child would have to keep telling people how to spell the name, others no strong opinion.

DurdleSnore · 21/01/2023 12:46

Astrid
Heidi
Penelope
Maeve
Erin

RuthW · 21/01/2023 13:24

Penelope lovely
Heidi ok
Maeve ok
Erin too dated
Astrid not nice

RuthW · 21/01/2023 13:28

Isn't it funny looking at other people's opinions? Each to their own.

One said Maeve was frumpy, but here it's the most up to date and popular of the lot. Can't believe another didn't know how to say it.

EmilyGilmoresSass · 21/01/2023 13:30

I'd pick Erin or Astrid personally.

KirstenBlest · 21/01/2023 13:50

@RuthW , but by reading opinions, OP can get an idea of issues that there might be.
You might think that Maeve is current but I might think it's a granny name. You can't believe someone might not know how to say it, but someone posted that they wouldn't know.
It's only recently become popular, so might seem new to many.
Maeve

midsomermurderess · 21/01/2023 15:07

Penelope.; Astrid, Maeve; and Heidi and Erin joint last.

Olios · 21/01/2023 15:12

Who described maeve as frumpy?

KirstenBlest · 21/01/2023 15:49

@BungleandGeorge , specifically, @CoffeeChocolateWine , but others have used terms like dreary and dowdy. It makes me think of Mauve and Mavis.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 21/01/2023 15:53

Astrid
Maeve
Heidi
Penelope
Erin

Yes it’s unfortunate. Written down it looks pretty but for people of mid 30s upwards Mavis was popularised as a frumpy name eg Mavis from Corrie and was frequently shortened to mave. Probably why Mavis hasn’t made a comeback in granny chic. I guess many choosing this name are a little younger.
it’s ok. It sounds quite unfinished to me, Although I think it does sound better when said with an Irish accent

midsomermurderess · 21/01/2023 16:40

It’s a pity Mavis is so disliked. Isn’t it derived from French, meaning song bird? So many people see it as northern and working class so it has to be a no.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 21/01/2023 17:39

Just to add to my earlier comment about me finding the name Maeve frumpy (sorry if it caused offence to anyone...only my opinion), but my 4yo DD also has a very old lady chic name. I think it's beautiful, strong, elegant and like Maeve it's quite current (as in come round again after many years of not being so popular). I've had many compliments on it. But many people think it's frumpy old lady. It makes absolutely no difference to me. I love it anyway and she owns it!

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/01/2023 17:44

Astrid - v nice
Penelope - nice but Penny is a bit wet, you’d have to impose Nell.
Erin - alright.
Heidi - very twee and a bit stripper, somehow
Maeve - too like Mauve

Zoe
Hope
Arran
Ffion
Verity
Felicity
Aislinn

might be others
