Is the name Emily still popular these days?

My and dh are starting to really like the name Emily but i am curious to know if it is still popular, the ONS website says it is number 21 on the top 100 names which is still quite mainstream i guess but i recall the name having a few years of mega popularity about 20 years ago so i'd expect most Emily's to be 13+ now.

Do you know any little Emilys? Does it feel dated?
This is my first child so i don't really know what names are popular especially because it varies depending on where you live.

Everyone either has or knows an Emily. So yea it's popular!

Might be area-specific. I know lots between about 4 and 8 (when I think it was in the top ten list). It’s a lovely classic name, so I can see the appeal.

Oddly, both my DC have a name that was 20 something in the name chart the year they were born. In DC1’s case I know a couple of others and met one at a baby group. In DC2’s case, I know a colleague with an older one but have never met another one. In DC1’s class, the only name with
multiples of it was one that was easily 50 something or lower in the name charts that year.

So I wouldn’t get hung up on overall popularity if I were you!

It's quite popular around where I am in central Scotland. My husband wanted to call our daughter Emily but we used a different but not too far away name instead because I knew it was so popular.

Her nursery class had 3 Emily's and the teacher was also Emily!

Lovely name.

coffeetofunction · 16/01/2023 08:53

I'd suggest the name Emily is a timeless classic that never goes out of fashion.

SummaLuvin · 16/01/2023 08:58

I associate the name Emily with those in their late 20s early 30s, so to me it is a little dated, but not so much as other names from that time such as Lauren and Ashley.

I grew up with an Emily and in our region, with quite a lazy accent, it was said 'Emm-Lee' with the 'I' completely dropped and she hated it, so it might be worth giving a little thought to how it is pronounced in your area.

I love the name and it was on our shortlist. Not too popular where I live…

KirstenBlest · 16/01/2023 10:03

It's a classic, and is currently less popular than it was because Amelia, Amelie, Emilia and, to some extent, Emmeline are used instead.

emmathedilemma · 16/01/2023 11:55

I know a few late 20's - mid 40's age range but can't think of any younger ones or that I ever hear friend's kids talk about. It's a lovely classic name.

SleepingStandingUp · 16/01/2023 12:01

I know one very tiny Emily, that's all but I think it sits in the Amelia-esque pool so it's current and on trend but not over satiated

Caszekey · 16/01/2023 12:04

, re middle names, 7 yo me desperately wanted Emily Victoria

. 37 yo me wanted Ariella or or lilyana so I'm not sure what that said about me

cctvrec · 16/01/2023 12:18

I have an Emily (16) and a Charlotte (13) and even though I only know of one more Emily round here (maybe 5 years younger) I love the name. It's a beautiful classic name that doesn't age. It suits a baby, middle aged women and old ladies all the same.

DuchessOfSausage · 16/01/2023 12:18

names.darkgreener.com/#emily
It seems to still be very popular.
Amelia is #2, Emilia is #32, Amelie is #87, Emma is #61 and Emmeline #312

BambinoBlue · 16/01/2023 14:33

More as a middle name, but I get it fairly regularly as a first name in my job (as a registrar!)

It's lovely. A classic.

HappyJellyBaby · 16/01/2023 14:40

I have an Emily, she's 1. There are loads of them around. My cousin by marriage is one, she's 30. My gran was one, she would be 110. There are three at the playground we go to plus one of the mums!

My Emily is Emily Katherine, both family names.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 17/01/2023 11:22

I haven't met any small Emilys for a long time, although I know an Émilie who is about six.

There are a LOT in their teens and twenties. I taught a class a few years ago with four Emilys, all very quiet with identical hairstyles. I had to learn which was which through their handwriting.

Wallabyone · 17/01/2023 11:25

I think it's still popular-I see it as a similar name to Sophie, in that it's pretty and popular and not really a fashion name.
I think Amelia/Emilia are far more prevalent now.

Penguinsaregreat · 18/01/2023 07:02

I know a few Emilys all in their 20s.
Its not a dated name. Emily Brontë springs to mind.
It is not in the same category as lots of names people are using which will date.

TheSproutOfWrath · 18/01/2023 08:13

I have a 30 year old Emily . It's a great name.

CharitySchmarity · 18/01/2023 09:49

I think it is classic enough that it doesn't really get dated. The youngest Emily I know personally would now be about 10, I think, but I would not be surprised at all if I heard of a newborn Emily. (I did hear of a newborn Eleanor the other day, which to me has a very similar timeless feel.)

For what it's worth, I also think Emily is a very nice name - feminine but not soppy, has a nice gentle sound, and has good diminutives.
