Problems with boys names that we like

We both like Henry but my name is Henrietta and although it's not the same name, it is the masculine form so I don't know what people would think of that?

We both like Jack but DH's cousins son is called Jack and he has the same surname as us as well.

We both like Arthur but neither of us like any of the traditional nicknames for Arthur and I think when he's younger, it's bound to get shortened to something.

Would you choose any of these names, despite the issues with them? Or are there any similar name suggestions? Thank you

I know a few Arthur’s and they all go by full names, no nn. So I think that could work

IglesiasPiggl · 14/01/2023 12:52

Definitely not Henry. Arthur probably the best bet - I don't know any Arthurs who shorten it
Also, how close are you with the cousin's child? I have never even met some of ours! If you hardly ever see them then Jack is also fine.

Purplemagnolias · 14/01/2023 13:55

Arthur is only 2 syllables - why would it need to be shortened?! It's so easy to say!

ofwarren · 14/01/2023 13:59

Any Arthur I've known uses the full name

Mumofgirls2017 · 14/01/2023 14:37

I’m not sure Arthur will necessarily get shortened but don’t have an Arthur to tell you! How about

james
edward
theodore
leo
joshua
max
vincent
george
charlie
thomas
alexander
albert
freddie
oscar

Cousins son would share great grandparents in common. Not a big deal unless you live in the same village or they would be at school together.

Arthur is fine. People won't shorten it if you don't.

Best probably to avoid Henry as a first name, could use it as a middle name.
Arthur Henry sounds good to me.

VenusClapTrap · 14/01/2023 14:47

No need to shorten Arthur. Nice name.

Purplemagnolias · 14/01/2023 14:55

Arthur is easier to say than Arth imo

fuckmylife2023 · 14/01/2023 17:03

I know an Arthur that goes by arty! No idea why as it's the same syllables but I quite like it

MrsMitford3 · 14/01/2023 17:09

The only Arthur I know is always called by full name.
It's a a lovely name!

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/01/2023 20:42

They are all fine albeit very popular - especially Jack

Henry nn Hal maybe?

atteatimeeverybodyagrees · 15/01/2023 07:25

Do you live in the same area as the the other Jack? They won't be in the same class at school so it shouldn't be a problem there.

Arthur is lovely

BumpyaDaisyevna · 15/01/2023 08:16

Another one coming on to say we know three Arthurs - never shortened to anything.

I think that could be a good choice!

CaramelMach · 15/01/2023 08:40

Wouldn't worry about the cousin link.

A good friend of mines cousin named both her kids the same names as my friend. They never see each other and it was a bit odd only when the second name came in!

Outfor150 · 15/01/2023 08:44

I think Henry is fine with you being called Henrietta. I like Henry the best by a long way of your names, though.
Jack is fine. Your DH’s child being called it doesn’t matter. I do think John is nicer, though. John with a nickname of Jack, as is traditional?
Arthur is fine, but I really don’t like it much. I think it might get shortened to Artie.

Mylobsterteapot · 15/01/2023 08:45

Unless you are very close the the cousin, I think Jack is fine. Plus it’s a common, nice name and therefore popular.

grayhairdontcare · 15/01/2023 08:46

Honestly op,you are completely overthinking this.
Just pick the name you both like the most

mondler · 15/01/2023 08:52

It's less common these days but plenty of people still get called after their parents so I don't see why you can't use Henry.

Like others have said Jack depends on how often you see DHs cousin.

Lots of Arthur's around here and they all go by Arthur with no nickname.

WrendaleCountryDogs · 15/01/2023 08:52

I would rather Henry & Henrietta than having two family members with the same name. Just the same first name would be a big no no in my family but definitely not with the same surname too.

I know a Holly who has an Oliver. Oliver goes by Ollie. Holly & Ollie.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 15/01/2023 09:00

What shortening, if any, do you go by?
I think Henry is probably too close, unless you go by Etta or similar.
Think Jack will be fine, unless very close in age and live nearby.
The Arthur's I know go by their full name.

piscosours · 15/01/2023 09:16

Henry is absolutely fine, plenty of people call their children after themselves. I have the same name as my dad.

Arthur probably won't get shortened so I wouldn't worry about that. I think that only happens if the parent pushes a nn because it doesn't naturally shorten

mallardducks · 15/01/2023 09:26

I don't see anything wrong with Henry's even tho it's similar to ur name and who cares what other ppl think. The answer to give to any ppl who might question it is that u like the bane. Then smile sweetly and silence them

roarfeckingroarr · 15/01/2023 10:12

I have an Arthur and he goes by Arthur - occasionally Artie-bear. I don't like Art or other shortenings.

roarfeckingroarr · 15/01/2023 10:13

Our Arthur's middle name is Henry and his dad is Jack 😂

Consufed · 15/01/2023 10:27

Max
Leo
Daniel (Danny)
James
Nathan
Finlay
Luke
Jacob (Jake)
