Please can I have your thoughts on which name you prefer.

Alice

Alicia pronounced A-liss-ia NOT A-Lee-sha

Also experience of how you have heard it pronounced or spelt as I know there are different ways to say it and if this would be a problem.

Thanks

Known one Alicia, she pronounced it A-liss-ia, it’s gorgeous and I prefer it to the A-Lee-sha pronunciation. I think Alicia Keys might be why people assume it’s pronounced like that which may cause you/her some issues. Alice is lovely too, but quite plain.

Alice on the grounds that I don't like the Aleesha pronunciation. If it was pronounced like the icia in Patricia, I'd love it.

I love Alicia pronounced Alice ee ah. I know one and she never has issues with it.

Purplemagnolias · 14/01/2023 12:21

Alyssia makes the pronunciation clear and avoids Alisha

Alicia

Most people get the right Ah-Liss-ee-ah pronunciation

Alice is nice but far too many of them

Both Alice and Alicia - Alice-ee-uh are lovely.

Alicia

Too many Alices and Alicia us usually said the way you want in the UK

LuckyThatMyBreastsAreSmallAndHumble · 04/03/2023 11:18

I like the Welsh version best Alys
Pronunciation is same as Alice.

SummaLuvin · 04/03/2023 13:33

Alicia - I went to school with one who said it A-Lee-Sha so that is my first thought even if the A-Liss-Ia pronunciation is more common. I am familiar with both so wouldn't be surprised or struggle with either.

Alyssia- this spelling to me firmly indicates the pronunciation you want, as does Alissia mentioned by PP.

Alice - I prefer this to Alicia/Alyssia.

Alicia or Alyssia (I pronounce these the same, a-LISS-ee-uh). Alessia another similar good name. I'm less fond of Alice because I see 'lice'.

CorvusPurpureus · 04/03/2023 19:22

I have an Alicia. Oddly, she got the 'Aleesha' pronunciation a lot in the uk, but that stopped happening when we moved to the ME.

Having said that, & I appreciate it's a niche concern, shouting 'For frick's sake Ali will you just stop faffing & move your arse' resulted in a tall, crop haired, slouching, sulky teenage girl wearing a baggy hoody having her boobs grabbed at Cairo Airport by a horrified security guard who just thought she was a chubby lad until he frisked her. Ali was startled but found it quite funny. Security bloke was terrified we'd have his job, poor bloke.

Other than that it's a great name 😊. Yes, you'll occasionally have to correct the Alissia/Aleesha pronunciation thing, but IME that's a one off.

I teach a lot of students with variant names like Ibrahim/Ebrahim or Khadija/Khadiga. You learn the pronunciation quickly & all is well.

ourflagmeansdeath · 04/03/2023 19:24

I love Alice! And Alyssa. Alicia would be my preferred spelling if you went for the 2nd option, I think Alyssia is very uncommon, most people wouldn't know it

peaceinourtime · 06/03/2023 00:00

Go for the Alyssa spelling if you want to be pronounced that way else she'll be set up for a life time of her name being mispronounced.

My daughter is called Elicia (El-iss-ee-uh). Nearly everyone pronounces it El-ee-sha. We live in the UK. Drives me nuts. So much so, we now call her Elle or Ellie instead.
