Taylor as a girls name?

Jenny7866 · 13/01/2023 11:09

We are expecting a new member of the family very soon and have hence been going over possible baby names. Preferably we would like a strong gender neutral name, and Taylor really appeals to us, however I am concerned that there are too many associations with Taylor Swift... Like if you just search up 'Taylor' on google, she's the first thing that pop ups for a long while. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Like maybe Skylar, Lindsay, Morgan, Meryl, Renee, Peyton, Emerson?

If gender neutrality is important to you then perhaps some of the names below might work?

Ray
Chris
Sam
Lesley/Leslie
Jules
Pat
Mitch(ell)
Jan
Georgie
Lou

Yes to Ray. I always think ray of light. Lovely 😍

Mydogatemypurse · 13/01/2023 19:10

Jean??

Cuppasoupmonster · 13/01/2023 19:10

I like it but then I like the American names, they’re fresh and energised sounding

scottishnames · 13/01/2023 19:13

Comfortably Each to their own, of course.
But the Romans who would know what Claudia meant lived over 2000 years ago, and the name was ancient even at that time.

Gaelic is still spoken today. And the nickname 'breac' was still widespread at the time Robert Louis Stevenson was writing 'Kidnapped' in the late 19th cent and has been kept alive by that book/film etc until now. Yes, Bryce is used as a name. But it is a boy's name, with the overtones of 'warrior-like/scarred in battle'. I still find it hard not to see it as odd for girls.
But obviously, your friends' child, their name.

I like it. I love American and surname type names though.

Whatthefuck3456 · 13/01/2023 19:29

Taylor spelt Tayla is beautiful and also the name Pippa. They are my favourite names

DaVariance · 13/01/2023 19:30

I like Taylor and Spencer for a girl

DillDanding · 13/01/2023 19:35

Did someone actually suggest Lesley or Pat? 😂😂

Retreat · 13/01/2023 19:36

How about Sydney?

DillDanding · 13/01/2023 19:37

It really isn’t. It makes you look like an idiot who thinks ‘yoonique’ spellings are a good thing.

That’s Tayto and they’re a lot nicer than Taylor or Tayla!

namechangeforthisoneq · 14/01/2023 07:49

That's my daughters name 🥰

MyView2 · 14/01/2023 07:54

Charlie (Charlotte) or Frankie (Frances or Francesca)?

HandsOffMyCarrierBags · 14/01/2023 07:56

Don’t like it but Taya is nice

Solido · 14/01/2023 07:57

I’m here for the Taytos 😆.
Tate is cool, as pp suggested.

DuncanBiscuits · 14/01/2023 08:01

What does Claudia mean?

I like Robin as a gender-neutral name. Also Harper.

But if you like Taylor, go with it! It’s your choice. Haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate

LightHousePanda · 14/01/2023 09:41

I know there are lots who don't like American names or surnames as first names on this board. I'm not one of them. There are lots I like.

However, I feel like Taylor is dated. I know people who used that name 15/20+ years ago but haven't heard it with babies now. I just checked the popularity - it comes from nothing in early 90s to basically completely die out twenty years later. Obviously a positive from that is he/she will be the only one in their class. But I don't like choosing a name which has recently past its peak and died out. I have a name that was popular for decades and then died out at the time I was named. While I like the name it is mostly linked to people 10/20+ years older than me and I don't like that. It's going to be an "old lady" name when I'm not one.

I work with a girl called Tayla and my female cousin is Taylor. I like it.

Taylor is a dated name now. It was quite popular about 20 years ago. I like some old names but Lindsay is, also extremely dated. The other names in your list sound like they would be the names of cheerleaders in something like HSM.

No worse than the Emerson or Peyton mentioned in the OP's post.

Obviously none of us know what the surname is as that is also an important of the decision.

lljkk · 14/01/2023 16:44

Not Emerson. Derived from "Them are some ..."

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/01/2023 20:43

Chikasan · 13/01/2023 11:15

Robin/Robyn
Rowan

These are nice. I think all yours are pretty awful Op, sorry.

Arran
Jocelyn
Carey

Beachloveramy · 14/01/2023 21:55

Love Taylor or Tayla

Lacienay · 15/01/2023 12:38

I work with a female Taylor. It’s shortened to Tay all the time.
It suits her.
