Nora/Norah

Which is your preferred spelling?

Also do you see this as a stand-alone name or is Eleanora/Leanora/Honora better suggested and then have Nora as a nn- can’t decide if these are too “frilly” and I think Nora/Norah sounds fab, just interested in thoughts 💭

Not pregnant. Just love discussing names and have had lists for years 😊 DP and I were watching Ted Lasso last night and there’s a character called Nora and we both really like it.

I suppose Nora is marginally less ugly than Norah, but there's not much in it.

It's a standalone name.

SummaLuvin · 11/01/2023 11:03

Norah is how I would automatically spell it. However, looking at the England & Wales 2021 baby names listing it seems Nora is more popular here, 406 babies spelt that way compared to 176 babies spelt Norah. For me, when thinking about a name with multiple spelling options I would always go for path of least resistance and select the most common one. Obviously barring personal reasons such as it being a family name spelt another way, or coming from a culture which prefers the alternative spelling...

Nora.

MrAloysiusSnuffleupagus · 11/01/2023 11:05

Sorry - Stand alone name

DuchessOfSausage · 11/01/2023 11:19

Flamin' Nora!

DurdleSnore · 11/01/2023 12:45

I prefer the Nora spelling.

HangoverSquare · 11/01/2023 12:53

I think the beautiful Norah Jones made the name less Nora Battyish in my mind. It's the kind of name that would be chic on an attractive girl/woman but might be a bit less chic if she's Nora Battyesque in stature.

fairycupcakes · 11/01/2023 13:04

I had to google Nora Batty so I’m not sure that would be an issue for my generation’s children 🤭

lol

true.

You must be a mere child yourself if you've never heard of her! Smile

The programme was on TV for about 30 years and Nora looked as old at the start as she did at the end. 'Twas quite remarkable!

I wish 🤭 I was born in the 90s.

Norah.

Purplemagnolias · 11/01/2023 15:30

Definitely Nora

LulooLemon · 11/01/2023 15:44

Norah

Twoinapod · 11/01/2023 15:48

I’m a 90s baby and definitely know who Nora Batty is 😂 they still play reruns on the tv now.

id go with the Nora spelling. The h at the end always looks weird to me. It’s a stand alone name

Mumsafan · 11/01/2023 15:50

My DD has a french friend called Norah - I think it's a beautiful name. But deffo spell with the h.

babysoupdragon2 · 11/01/2023 15:52

Stand alone name.
I have a Norah. I was surprised by how many people spell it Nora.

inquisitorgeneral · 11/01/2023 15:52

I think it's nice, with either spelling. It's a name that's familiar to everyone but not overly popular.
Norah Jones comes to mind.
Kids won't know who Nora Batty is. So don't let the old TV show dissuade you.

RuthW · 11/01/2023 17:36

Norah is fine on it's own but I love Leonora much better.

Caspianberg · 11/01/2023 17:41

Nora.
We had on our list of Ds was a girl. Dh and I are both 80s babies and never heard of Nora batty. So I doubt many under 50 will have now

VenusClapTrap · 12/01/2023 08:51

Love it. Prefer Nora.

Blendandmix · 12/01/2023 09:03

I'd spell it Nora. I like it it's sweet

HeBrokeMyNecklace · 12/01/2023 09:06

Nora is Irish, Eleanora is Italian. One is not the nickname of the other.

junebirthdaygirl · 12/01/2023 09:30

In lreland it would always be Nora. I prefer that. Love that name. It seems to be coming back after a long absence.

Purplemagnolias · 12/01/2023 10:15

Why add an H? Nora is lovely

BubziOwl · 12/01/2023 12:40

It's a lovely name on its own, but I do just love Leonora and then you have several nickname options!

I'm a 90s baby too, and I also have no clue who Nora Batty is. I've heard the name but never had any idea what it refers to.
