Any thoughts on Aurla?

I can't read it with the letters in the right order. It looks like it should be pronounced Ah roo la.

Bournetilly · 07/01/2023 20:41

Awful, just spell it Orla

AmandaMirandaPanda · 07/01/2023 20:49

I haven't seen it before, but didn't connect it with Orla/Órlaith until you mentioned it. My first thought was a kind of contraction or variant of Aurelia.

AnotherNameChangeYes · 07/01/2023 22:31

Looks like you’ve just moved the letters of Laura around.

ofwarren · 07/01/2023 22:34

Why would you do that? Dreadful

jtaeapa · 07/01/2023 22:40

It’s a minced up version of Laura. Odd.

MessiTheGoat · 07/01/2023 22:42

I know someone with a daughter called Aurla. She was named after a relative who died, and was called Laura. Aurla is an anagram of Laura.

Nobody has any problems pronouncing it.

Veenah · 07/01/2023 22:43

I'm Irish and I wouldn't see this and think it was an alternative spelling of Orla, I'd pronounce it a bit differently.

MonsterChopz · 07/01/2023 22:50

It's an old Scottish name and is pronounced the same as Orla. I'm in Scotland and know a couple of Aurla's but Orla is still the more popular spelling.

evemillbank · 07/01/2023 22:56

I'd assume their parents didn't know how to spell Orla.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 07/01/2023 23:47

I've met an Aurla whose parents called her that as they thought it was a 'prettier' way of spelling Orla.

This was my face as they told me this.

Aurla?
YourWinter · 07/01/2023 23:50

Stick to Orla, or Orlagh if you have to muck about with it.

Rickandmortified100 · 08/01/2023 00:24

I really don’t like it. I made a very weird sound trying to pronounce it 😂

Cleanthatup · 08/01/2023 00:29

It sounds like A-rula, awful!!

secondly if your going to use a traditional Irish name…. You must must spell it correctly.

DurdleSnore · 08/01/2023 07:54

Vitriolinsanity · 07/01/2023 20:16

The child then adult will be spelling this out repeatedly for ever and ever.

This. Just use Orla.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 08/01/2023 10:25

Aurful.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 08/01/2023 10:27

The AU makes it more of an ow-r-la than ohr-lah

RambamThankyouMam · 08/01/2023 18:19

Sounds like retching.

Grassisbluer · 08/01/2023 18:24

I'm Irish and I'd pronounce Aurla differetlý to Orla. Orla starts with an Oh sound.

ForeverMessy456 · 08/01/2023 18:32

We had Orlaith chosen for a girl too but thought she would spend her life spelling her name to people.

I came across Aurla as an alternative as well but wasn't sure about the spelling either.

We decided we would go for Orlah.

If you were originally keen on Orlaith but wanted something easier why didn't you go for Orla instead? Orla is the modern Irish spelling of Orlaith (not an anglicisation as some assume).

Orlah seems so random.

HoratioNightboy · 08/01/2023 19:55

"It's an old Scottish name"

It isn't really, the first recorded use was only in 2008. Even Orla has no real history in Scotland, dating only from the 1960s.

Not sure how I feel about it OP. Seems an unnecessary alternative, but it's pretty common to fanny about with name spellings to create something different so if that's what you like then go for it.

riotlady · 08/01/2023 20:01

I’d just use Orla tbh

GlassOnions · 08/01/2023 20:02

It's terrible. She'll have to correct every single person who tries to say her name for the first time. Also it reminds me of Areola 😑

Spanielsarepainless · 08/01/2023 20:09

Grim. Looks like misprint. What's wrong with Orla?
