Opinions please!

OP posts:

I would pronounce it Aliyaah on first swift read.
I have a spelling name that swift reads wrong 90% for people. Way to many vowels.
You are condemning your child to a lifetime of negative interactions from certificates to talking to anyone at the end of a phone.
Points though.. It's unguessable on Wordle

Clarabe1 · 02/01/2023 00:12

It sounds made up or like another poster says - a vowel pick on countdown. Sorry op it’s bloody awful

KnickerlessParsons · 02/01/2023 00:13

I think it's from the Greek, not Latin.
Helios is Ancient Greek for sun. It's sol in Latin.

loopyloutoo · 02/01/2023 00:20

Yep, came here to say duty free also

xprincessxjanetx · 02/01/2023 00:57

No, makes me think of something from Star Wars or Star Trek.

LuluBlakey1 · 02/01/2023 01:09

No- awful name to saddle a child with.

SpinningFloppa · 02/01/2023 01:10

Glad it’s not just me that thought alien 😅

CallieQ · 02/01/2023 01:20

Sounds like a cleaning product

SkylightSkylight · 02/01/2023 01:21

Sorry, no. Just looks like you've stolen a bag of vowels! And in the U.K., it will not be pronounced how you've written! It'll be mangled.

LondonSamantha · 02/01/2023 01:29

I'm so sorry, I LOVE unusual names and names from all countries & cultures but this really-really-really sounds like Alien when you say it out loud (and when people are called names, it's out loud not written down). It sounds like Alien a LOT. Sorryyyyyy xx

TempsPerdu · 02/01/2023 08:54

Personally I prefer names that contain at least one consonant. This one is just a vowel salad.

TempsPerdu · 02/01/2023 08:57

Sorry I take it back - missed the lone l there! Still way too vowel heavy for me though, and I agree with pp that these sorts of names will date.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/01/2023 22:13

It's the name of the duty free shop at Luton airport.

Also sounds like a sweet diminutive of Azalea.

First thing I thought of too. They also run all the duty free in NZ! Not sure it's the best connotation OP

It looks like it should be the name of a weapon used in Ancient Greek warfare.

scottishnames · 02/01/2023 11:32

Family name in ancient Rome (members included Emperor Hadrian).
As previous poster said, three syllables, not four: Ee-li-ah.

Also (in ancient Rome) sometimes spelled Ailia: Ay-li-ah

LittleBearPad · 02/01/2023 11:34

Looks like you missed out the ‘m’

Marcipex · 02/01/2023 11:37

Soleil is a beautiful name with the same meaning.
also Daisy ☀️

inquisitorgeneral · 02/01/2023 11:52

I appreciate the history of the name, but in the UK it will be pronounced something very close to "alien".

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/01/2023 11:54

I like it

Abhannmor · 02/01/2023 12:01

It could grow on people. And has a nice meaning.

Doveyouknow · 02/01/2023 12:07

Ae is normally pronounced eh - might be easier to spell it Elia to get the right pronunciation? Also much easier to spell when she starts school...

Mrstumbletap · 02/01/2023 12:27

Sounds ridiculous, sorry.

Insomnia23 · 01/01/2023 22:14

Aelia is a latin name that means Sun. It’s not made up…

I’m sorry OP, but it’s not quite.

Aelius was the surname of a prominent family in Ancient Rome and the female form would have been Aelia. The original meaning is not known. One theory is that it may have been a latinisation of the Greek word ‘Helios‘, which does mean ‘sun’.

Naming a girl in 2022 Aelia with the intended meaning of ‘sun’ is a bit of a stretch. Is the meaning or the Latin important? How about Aurora, Roman goddess of the dawn?

2chocolateoranges · 02/01/2023 12:48

I’d presume you had missed out the M in Amelia.

planefullofotters · 02/01/2023 12:49

Sounds like a body part
