Iola - thoughts

DP likes Iola for a baby girl. There's something I don't like about it - maybe it sounds too much like Areola? What are initial impressions?

(Isla not an option, too trendy!)

Areola is my first thought!

PritiPatelsMaker · 27/12/2022 10:25

If you don't like it I'd say it was out. You can't name your DD Simeon thing that one of you dislikes.

DotDotDotDotDot · 27/12/2022 11:43

I initially read this name as Lola but then realised it’s an I. I’m guessing then that the pronunciation is eye-oh-la?
Im not keen to be honest. What names do you like?

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 27/12/2022 11:44

People will hear Iona.

Mamette · 27/12/2022 11:45

Yes I thought the same as you OP.

SunsetGirl · 27/12/2022 11:45

How about Viola, pronounced V-eye-ola?

mamas12 · 27/12/2022 11:51

In Welsh it’s pronounced Yo-la
its lovely

DacwMamYnDwad · 27/12/2022 11:54

Welsh name pronounced Yolla.

Beamur · 27/12/2022 11:55

I know of one girl with this name. Not keen myself, it doesn't flow - too many vowel sounds, and it sounds like half a name - like you've missed a bit off. Like Viola/Iola.
The Welsh pronunciation is much nicer sounding. The one I know is eye-oh-la

WunWun · 27/12/2022 11:57

I think people are going to think it's Lola. Like I just did.

immergeradeaus · 27/12/2022 11:58

I thought it was Lola. In a world of San-serif fonts, the whole Lola/Iola mix-up is just going to run forever.

DacwMamYnDwad · 27/12/2022 12:06

According to a name site it's from greek and means 'violet-coloured dawn', Name sites aren't always reliable - the 'welsh baby names' sites tend to be unreliable.

I think that as a welsh name it's used as the feminineform of Iolo (pron. Yollo')

Dontrocktheboat · 27/12/2022 17:22

I've only known one person with this name, I think she was of Greek descent and it was pronounced Yolla - so I would assume this pronounciation.

beachsandseaicecream · 27/12/2022 17:24

What about Iona? Or Ianthe?

Notonyournellykelly · 27/12/2022 17:29

I know someone whose name is pronounced yoll-ah. I am not sure how it is spelt though. I don't love it, but it is a name.

If you would be pronouncing it ee-yo-la, yes that's a lot like areola! It also just sound a jumble of vowel sounds to me. Viola is lovely but I would tend to pronounce that Vigh-oh-la, not vee-oh-la (which I don't like).

Notellinganyone · 27/12/2022 17:40

One of the most irritating girls I’ve taught in a 27 year teaching career was called this!

winonarose · 27/12/2022 17:47

I love the name Lola. It's short and sweet 💖

RambamThankyouMam · 27/12/2022 18:17

Awful!

Looks like Lola written in lower case.

Eye-oh-la or Aiyala confusion over pronunciation.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/12/2022 01:29

People are just going to read it as the (drippy) Lola which will drive her mad for life.

Ismene (is-me-ne)
Iona
Ione (Eye-oh-ne)
Ianthe
Even Isola, I guess..

or if you were looking for something that sounds more like yola then go for Yolanda
