Baby girl due in a few days, I have a name set I like Shona, any unique names I prefer. Me and my partner really like Shona for our girl, we need some middle names any ideas would be great.

I'm Irish in my mid 50s and I know loads! None under 40 though.
It's a nice name but I associate it with my age group, along with Suzanne and Barbara and Martina, which I also think are nice names but very dated.

I would probably use a modern middle name, quite like Elodie mentioned above.

ChristmasJingleBalls · 17/12/2022 13:06

Thanks for insulting all my suggestionsHmm
I happen to think those names are nice and suggested them in good faith to the op.

Over reaction much? Hmm

They are massively overused, every girl has them. Doesn’t mean they aren’t nice, just means they all have the same middle names. Like Louise/Jane.

Hooverphobe · 17/12/2022 13:08

Shona is lovely.

Don’t fret too much about the middle name - it’s for documents, not every day life. Concentrate on enunciation instead. 😉

skippingthroughthedaisies · 17/12/2022 13:12

Shona is quite popular in our region. It’s a lovely name.

FayCarew · 17/12/2022 13:14

@ChristmasJingleBalls , thanks, my thoughts too.
On here middle names seem to be more important than they are in real life.
How does Shona go with the surname? Might not go with all surnames. Not only Shown a ... but 'Shorn a ...' jokes etc

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/12/2022 13:18

Shona Elizabeth

Justme10 · 17/12/2022 13:38

I don't know about the middles name but I'm in my 20s and went to school with quite a few Shona's so it seems like it's more popular in some areas than others.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/12/2022 14:14

I quite like it. The couple I know would be in their 40s now.

I like family names for middle names, have you got any you like?

It’s Scottish I think. Are you in Scotland?

Justme10 · 17/12/2022 14:18

@Luredbyapomegranate yes, I meant areas in Scotland.

misslucy92 · 17/12/2022 14:34

It’s not my cup of tea. It reminds me of names that were popular among my peers such as Shannon and Shauna.

Shayla seems nicer to me but Shona is perfectly usable too.

Shona Catherine
Shona Hazel
Shona Joy
Shona Emily
Shona Belle
Shona Isabelle

I think it was slightly weird to read the initial post, then see the specific suggestions made by one of the people replying and then go through them detailing how you don't like them. Instead of suggesting any names yourself, like most ppl do. Can see what that poster thought you rude tbh

TrixJax · 17/12/2022 14:50

Shona is a lovely Scottish name. Pronounced Show-na.

Was popular name back in 1970s. I know several Shonas who are in their 40s and 50s now

Can also be spelt Shiona and Seonaid

Beamur · 17/12/2022 14:56

I really like it - especially pronounced with a Scottish accent. I'd put another quite Scottish name with it. I think I'm in a minority for liking Kirsty too.
Our kids have quite traditional Scottish middle names as a nod to DH's family history but they don't work with Shona as too similar sounding.

MyGrandmaLizzie · 17/12/2022 14:58

@Sherrystrull I think @FayCarew was stating a fact in that all the middle names you suggested have been very popular as middle name so over the decades, for girls, plus Jane and Ann/e. My sister and I both have very popular middle names. Mae and Rose are currently very popular and there nothing right or wrong in choosing or suggesting them. It all depends on whether you want a popular or more unusual option.

NotToBeOrToBe · 17/12/2022 15:02

I love it. Would have been my DS name if he.was a girl. Also love Sadie.

Maggiesgirl · 17/12/2022 21:21

I'm a Shona, and born in the 50's so not all 70's

fallfallfall · 17/12/2022 21:25

only know of one and it was short for Shoshana (biblical name)

RambamThankyouMam · 17/12/2022 21:58

Not Faye! Look up Shon Fae and you'll know why!

Mumuser124 · 17/12/2022 22:02

I am a Shona. Born in the 90’s and have zero Scottish in me (I think).

My mum found it in a baby book at the library. My middle name is terrible so I wouldn’t recommend mine but I have always loved being a Shona. I’ve never met another in person.

SummaLuvin · 18/12/2022 11:39

My first thought was the Zimbabwean language.

midsomermurderess · 18/12/2022 17:18

I really don’t like it. It takes me back to 1970s Scotland, and not in a good way.

squatternutbosh12 · 19/12/2022 18:16

I knew sisters Shona and Lorna when I was growing up. Always loved their names. We did not grow up in Scotland and I never met any others (presumably they are quite rarely used outside of Scotland) but remember thinking as a child that their names were so pretty and I still think so now!
