I hear you and part of me thinks this too. Trouble is, virtually all the names we like suffer from the popularity problem. Some even more so. Other contenders have been George, Leo, Oscar and Henry.

I’d much rather one of these than a name which has gone out of fashion and will lead to a lifetime of everyone assuming he is a generation older than he is before meeting him, e.g. David, Paul, Robert. Or a name which isn’t popular because frankly it’s just weird, poncy, pretentious, geeky or downmarket. At least if a name is popular, it means people like it.

I’m quite fond of Ferdinand. Maybe you prefer that?

Or maybe you have other suggestions? Please feel free to list any. I’m very open to hearing of genuinely attractive names which are not popular.

Lots of people like it at the same time. People liked Keith, Kevin or Nigel. That simply makes them fashionable at that time but not 'nice' !!

Alfred would most naturally shorten to Alf or possibly Alfie when young. The emphasis is on the Alf not on Red.

What about all the Williams who go by Liam? Not all diminutives come from the start of the name.

I like Elliott, Elias, Michael, Adam, Nicholas. All of them long and not shortened.

But that’s me, I wouldn’t name my baby anything in the top 10 but obviously the majority does. It’s still fine!

To answer your question Ferdinand, although unique, is difficult to use as a full first name. It’s the other end of Freddie.

If you are in love with Freddie , I would go with Alfred or Wilfred , which he can also make Alfie, Wilf or even use them easily on their own. I know a 5 year old Wilfred for example and it suits him great. It’s good to give him options when he is older, and that’s why I think that Freddie at the birth certificate is quite childish and very restrictive.

Are you putting Freddie or Frederick on the BC? I know a Freddy whose full name is Frederick David James, with an M surname. I like it, and the initials aren't unfortunate.
