Doriana or Nicoleta?

CristinaNov182 · 14/12/2022 12:59

Both are Romanian names.

living in uk so looking for a nice name that can be easily pronounced and spelled

Doriana - Do ree ana

I think there’ll be issues with spelling for Nicoleta, so open to different spelling suggestions. I don’t like Nicole.

I prefer Nicoleta - it's easy to spell? I find Doriana a bit frilly for me.

CristinaNov182 · 14/12/2022 13:08

Thanks, glad it’s easy to spell. Wouldn’t it get a double t? Nicoletta? Not nice to having to correct it every time, I’d add the double tt instead if that’s the most likely uk spelling.

what about Dorotea or Dorothea ? Just thought of it now.

I like Dory as a nickname too, for Doriana, for when she’s little. There is also no one with this name in uk. There are some Nicoleta’s. But it doesn’t have to be unique :))

Why not a nationality invariant name?
Like Paula, or Laura.

CristinaNov182 · 14/12/2022 13:10

these 2 are pronounced differently in English than in Romanian

Paula is Pah uu la

Laura is Lah uu ra

it’s ah-u rather than o

i also have a Paula, 2 actually in my family.

want a name that can retain the Romanian pronunciation

CatJumperTwat · 14/12/2022 13:10

She'd have to spell out both names in the UK. Why not use a Romanian name that's also common in the UK?

Adriana
Bianca
Carmen
Claudia
Diana
Georgiana
Laura
Maria

...the list goes on.

ofwarren · 14/12/2022 13:12

I really like the sound of Nicoletta. I do think it would be spelled with the extra T most often.

Danana · 14/12/2022 13:12

She will have to spell both of them out, though with Nicoleta she might be able to get away with simply saying “just one t”

CristinaNov182 · 14/12/2022 13:13

@CatJumperTwat thats what I’m trying to find out, if they’ll be mispronounced or misspelled I won’t go for it

Claudia has the same issue as Laura and Paula

Some remind me of people I know or have in family

I like Carmen but my DH doesn’t

FluffyYucca · 14/12/2022 13:13

I like Nicoleta but agree it’s most likely to be spelled with two Ts - that’s how both of the people I know with that name spell it, anyway.

CristinaNov182 · 14/12/2022 13:15

Ok, Nicoletta is fine, have no issues compromising on spelling. Just want it pronounced the same.

Doriana may be mispronounced as Do ree arna. Dory is a nice nickname.
Nicoleta is likely to end up as Nic.

Bonheurdupasse · 14/12/2022 13:19

I think most names would have the different pronunciation issue...
Of that list I think Maria would be the only one not to. (Or only to a lesser extent).
I'd say people would actually "botch" the pronunciation of more unusual names - like these two - even more!
There was a Cristina in the year above me and people here had issues with that even...

fairlygoodmother · 14/12/2022 13:22

I like Nicoleta, and I think it looks nicer with one t.
In my experience no matter what your name and how common it is you end up having to spell it - Sarah, Alison, Jackie, Amelia, Philip, Stephen etc all have two common spellings. So just go with what you like best.

CatJumperTwat · 14/12/2022 13:27

You'll probably have to compromise somewhere. There aren't going to be many names that:

  • Are Romanian
  • People in the UK and Romania will spell correctly without prompting
  • Are pronounced the same in both places
  • Don't remind you of anybody you've known

Which elements can you compromise on?

I'd suggest not being too precious about the pronounciation. I know a Russian Masha who goes by Maria in England. An Irish 'Me-Hall' who goes by Michael when he's over here. A German friend pronounces my name with a hard-G instead of soft, and it doesn't bother me.

CristinaNov182 · 14/12/2022 14:29

@fairlygoodmother yes, I prefer one T also. And you’re right, this can happen even with native names.

@CatJumperTwat yep, even Nicoleta reminds me of someone :), but once a name becomes my DD name, I’m sure I won’t think of anyone else.

I want 1 and 3, the rest is less important.

Romanians have no issues with spelling Romanian words or names :)), it’s only a problem here. And it’s not just an issue with understanding foreign accents, I’ve seen English ppl asked by other English ppl how to spell their first or last name, when even for me it’s easy.

R it’s a phonetic language, 1:1 sound:letter (except 4 exceptions for a 1:2 or 1:3 sound:letter cases, but even these won’t ever be mistaken for different combinations or letters). Very similar to Italian.

I know a little Romanian Teodora (known as Teo) and always thought that was a lovely name :)

CristinaNov182 · 14/12/2022 15:14

@TallulahBetty thank you, yes it’s lovely, but a close friend has a little girl with this name

Plump82 · 14/12/2022 15:17

I have a really common first name from the 80s and 90s that I constantly have to spell out so I'd go for whatever spelling you like.
My favourite is Nicoleta.

RuthW · 14/12/2022 15:59

Doriana as I love any 'arna' names

Rauha · 14/12/2022 16:19

Nicoleta is beautiful

DisforDarkChocolate · 14/12/2022 16:20

I like Doriana.

LulooLemon · 14/12/2022 16:22

Nicoleta is lovely - don't change the spelling. It's not a British name, so why try to put a British spelling on it?

Bonheurdupasse · 14/12/2022 19:23

@CatJumperTwat

Out of interest - is your friend's name definitely not Maria ? I've a friend whose name is Maria, diminutive Masha in Russian - she goes by Masha with us but Maria in work.

AnnaTortoiseshell · 14/12/2022 19:29

Both are lovely. Dory and Nico are solid nicknames. I would keep the spellings - having to spell your name here is really common. I have a really basic name and have to spell it all the time. Don’t compromise on your name for that reason. I think it’s only an issue when you have a deliberately ‘unique’ spelling - like Raychul instead of Rachel, for example.

dahlianoir · 14/12/2022 20:18

Nicoletta reminds me of those nicotine patches.

I have Romanian friends in the UK with a Carla.
