So I’m due next month and pretty early on in the pregnancy we settled on Chester. I’m a teacher and wanted a name that I hadn’t come across and was a little bit different. But now I’m worrying that it’s chavvy.
Please can you share your opinions on the name

His middle name is James (after my dad) and I do love the sound of Chester James but I don’t want to come across pretentious with a double barrelled name.

we like a few other names but they have been taken by relatives and friends and dogs lol
including; Arlo, Ralph, Charlie and Vinnie
We do also like Reuben

Any advice would be lovely!! (It’s our first baby and it just feels like the worlds biggest decision)

lemmein · 10/12/2022 03:08

I like it!

allboysherebutme · 10/12/2022 03:33

Love Ralphie, Alro and Charlie, I feel Chester sounds like a surname. X

Mollie3 · 10/12/2022 04:16

Yes we know a doggy Chester I like it for an animal but person I’m not as keen

i agree it does sound a bit dated and stuffy

jasper is nice and sounds similar

name your baby what you want to! I changed my baby name just before birth and don’t regret it

i have a popular name for my gen and have always been faced with ‘0h not another..name’ so I’d go for originality over nice well used name every time

Mollie3 · 10/12/2022 04:21

perhaps go for something similarly ‘original’ that you and DH like more than Chester
/ my point being!

YouWhatBruv · 10/12/2022 04:55

The first thing that comes to mind is Chester the molester. It's not a great name. James Chester would be better if you were really set on using it.

CalmConfident · 10/12/2022 04:58

Maybe make a shortlist of name options, then wait until
baby arrives and choose. I agonised over names but once we meet our DS it was suddenly obvious which one suited him and which didn’t.

kingtamponthefurred · 10/12/2022 05:03

Chester sounds like a slightly overweight American who goes to Trump rallies and whose best friend is his labrador.

Aramox · 10/12/2022 05:54

Leo yes, but it's not short for Leonard. Len is short for Leonard. Leo could stand alone.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 10/12/2022 07:50

I like Leo and Leon.
All the people I know called Lenny or Leo or Leon have been lovely.

sashh · 10/12/2022 08:51

I just imagine a Roman fort.

HandlebarLadyTash · 10/12/2022 09:01

Most names can be teased into something silly. If you like it then thats all that's what counts. Don't fixate or dwell on i too much.

larry520 · 10/12/2022 09:18

Dorisbonson you are a small minded unpleasant person. I hope you have never been in a position to employ someone, imagine actually thinking their name should hold them back, that's just as abhorrent as racism or sexism. I have a senior role and work with people with all sorts of names , including financial consultants called Daisy and Dexter. Whatever the parents ambitions for this child, I'd hope he grows up to treat all people with respect, you have clearly failed.

LaLuz7 · 10/12/2022 09:26

Chester exposes him to one too many chest jokes. It just sounds wet and weak.

Sorry

Limer · 10/12/2022 09:27

long version Winchester. Please, no.

What about long version Manchester, Dorchester or Colchester?

viques · 10/12/2022 09:32

Leonard/Leo is lovely, a very strong name.

Namesfordays · 10/12/2022 09:32

Thanks for all the opinions/advice I think I’m going to take the pressure off the decision and have a shortlist ready for when he makes his appearance!x

I kept my kids names to myself as any suggestions i made id always have someone saying they didnt like it. Once they arrived and we announced the names noone said a bad word.
Mumsnet hates my sons name! But i love it and i can tell sometimes when i tell people his name theyre not keen but they keep their opinions to themselves.
Aslong as you and your partner love it thats all that matters!

Jemimapinotduck · 11/12/2022 12:28
