Could you please tell me what you think of the following names:

Are any of them too common (chavy?) and what sort of little boy do they make you think of?

Gabriel
Joseph/Jo
Charles/Charlie
James
Oliver
Tobias/Toby
Bejamin/Ben
Benedict/Ben/Ne d
William/Will
Joshua/Josh
Josiah
Rufus
Montgomery/Monty

Thank you

I love Rufus and we have an Oscar, Hugo and an Arthur if that gives you anymore ideas.

Surely Ned is a shortening for (usually) Edward? Hadn't heard it as a shortening for Benedict, but I can't belive that anyone would use it as a name in it's own right? I think it's a nice nickname.

I like most of your names, but would assume that a Rufus had red hair, and not that keen on Monty - I had a friend called Jonty though (short for Jonathon) which is cool. Prefer Benedict to Benjamin - just more unusual. I think Toby is a bit of a pet name - maybe because we had a dog clled that, definately prefer Tobias, and like Tobit too. Josiah is a bit biblical (although we wanted an Ezra, so can't really talk!). William is very nice.

None of the names bring anything especially to mind. My cousin is called Gabriel and he was an angelic little boy - now he is a bit of a hunk.

I love: Joseph/Jo, Tobias/Toby,

Can't decide whether or not I love: Montgomery/Monty

Others are all fine. Except Rufus which sounds abit Hooray-Henry to me.

Jo is a girl's name

alfiesbabe · 01/02/2008 20:42

Jo is so not a girls name!! It's an abbreviation of Joseph

Joe is the abbreviation of Joseph

Very much like Rufus and Monty...
But then I am keen on Felix & Ernest too!! (not thats what i called mine)

Poncy names bring it on - much better than being one of the 5 Williams or Joe in your class.
But there is the rule of thought that your just setting them up for a life of teasing - sorry for my two then.

Thanks all.

Nooka, yes I think 'Ned' is generally a shortening of Edward, I think we may have made it a shortening of Benedict ourselves because we like both Ben and Ned.

LOL at Toby being a dog's name (good old Punch and Judy)

FillyjonkisCALM - which is the one you think is midly chavy - is it one of the 'J' ones?

137Wallis - how on earth did you find five boys names that you like? what are the others?

Ed/Eddie. That's a good name

Love Benedict - would have chosen it for my son but it's the name of an ex so don't think DH would have been too keen!! Like the fact that Ben is not uncommon but Benedict is. (if that makes sense)

Rufus is a lovely name, I wanted to call DS Rufus but DH wouldn't let me (it is one of his middle names though - yes he has more than one, we are THAT pretentious).

Monty is really cool too but it is my dog's name so can't get past that (I have wasted one of my favourite girl's names on the other dog so I do actually give my dogs names I really really like).

ThreeBluecubs · 03/02/2008 22:11

We have already used Rufus for a middle name too!

Gabriel-like

Joseph/Jo- love Joseph or Joe (but only if Joe is the actual name, rather then the shortened version of Joseph)

Charles/Charlie- like Charles

James- like

Oliver-love

Tobias/Toby- yes for Tobias

Bejamin/Ben- like both, BUT Ben only if that is the name on Birthcertificate

Benedict/Ben/Ne d-like Benedict

William/Will- like William

Joshua/Josh- like Joshua

Josiah- not so keen,

Rufus- hmmm, this will always be a dogs name to me, sorry (but it is actually a nice name, so, tis a shame really)

Montgomery/Monty- Montgomery is a bit posh...but it is a lovely sounbding name, I just would never have been brave enough, I think...

As you can see, I'm not keen on shortened names, unless they are actually the childs official name...I can't see the point in calling a child one thing , when not planning to actually using that name to call the child by...

My dh & I quickly agreed on girls names but had a lot more trouble with boys. In the end we had a short list of 8 or 10, that we both quite liked, so at about 38 weeks, I wrote them on individual bits of paper, a set each. Then independently we put them in order, favourite first. DS got DH's 1st choice as 1st name (my 2nd) and 2nd choice as 2nd name (my 3rd choice). Might help!

Gabriel - not to my liking
Joseph/Jo - love the name Joseph (can't use it as Joe doesn't work with my surname)
Charles/Charlie - I like this; friend used it for her baby recently and really suits him.
James - nice, prefer as middle name for some reason though
Oliver - his was our choice if DD had been a boy

Bejamin/Ben - quite like this, but again not sure about Ben on it's own
Benedict/Ben/Ned - not keen on Benedict; like Ned though
William/Will - I like this
Joshua/Josh - I like Joshua but not keen on Josh
Josiah - not keen
Rufus - not keen
Montgomery/Monty - not keen although Monty would grow on me
