Sibling names too similar????

MrsT36 · 03/12/2022 06:53

We’ve just found out we’re having a baby girl and are over the moon!
we already have a little boy called Hugo. The problem is, the only girls name we can agree on is Margot/Margaux.

it was the name we picked when we didn’t know Hugo’s sex and we do still love it.
I just worry they’re too similar and it looks like we have no imagination. Also worry they’ll grow up to resent having similar names and feel they don’t have their own identity.

Would love some thoughts/opinions/advice on this and alternative name suggestions please!

Hi all! Thank you so much for all of the suggestions, there are some lovely names on here and some we had already floated. I like Marina and my husband likes Primrose.

He has told me mumsnet is not deciding the name of our child 🤣 however it’s really helpful to get some perspectives and hear the biggest criticisms people might raise to see if they both us or not.

I had also thought of going Margaret or Margeruite (my husband does not like, however I had a great aunt Margeruite who was a Maggie so I do like)

Lots of food for thought and if you have any more suggestions please keep them coming! X

Marina is quite popular where I live.
Primrose would need a diminutive. Posy is nice.

Margot and Elodie don't seem to me to have any similar vibe other than they are both currently popular, but a name with a similar vibe and meaning is Greta.

I would disagree there - Margot and Elodie are both French for a start, and both quite elegant, whereas Greta is more Germanic and imo rather ugly sounding.

Marguerite could work.

Or
Eloise
Miranda
Lucy
Juliette
Annabel/Annabelle
Isabelle
Rosaline
Esme
Lara
Marianne
Alexandra
Gabrielle

Ellmau, you have me there. Neither Margot nor Elodie sound elegant to me.
My similarity was in terms of number of short syllables, and strong consonants.

I'm not a fan of matchy sibling names, I'm a twin and I'm so grateful my parents didn't give my sister and I matchy names, but thats just my personal preference. I love Hugo & Margot and I don't think people will judge on their names. Not sure how they would feel about their matcy names themselves though.

I also love Marguerite, Marina and Mariah with Hugo.

Martha?

Yika · 04/12/2022 18:28

I think they are usable together actually although of course there is a similarity. But that's only noticeable if you are using them in the same sentence. Otherwise, there is no danger of mishearing one for the other. They are both cute names. If you love Margot / Margaux I wouldn't let the similarity stop you using it. I would go for the -gaux spelling to make as much of a distinction as possible with Hugo.

MrsT36 · 08/12/2022 08:30

Thanks again for the suggestions, Martha has come up quite a lot which I do like.
in my searching yesterday I came across Alma which is totally different but I kind of like???
I’ve not come across another Alma yet, though being rare isn’t necessary?

I think Margot is fine alongside Hugo. They look quite different, even if the end sound is the same. Please don’t spell Margaux. There are so many other Margaret variations too. You mentioned Margeruite -wouldn’t this be Marguerite? I also like Alma.

Hugo and Marnie
Hugo and Maisie
Hugo and Mirabelle
Hugo and Hattie
Hugo and Poppy
Hugo and Helena

I don't see a problem at all. They're no more matchy than all the names that end in 'ee' sound - if you had a Katie and Freddie for example. I know they both have a G too, but the endings are spelled differently.

Help! I have a baby boy due in February and we are planning to call him Reuben. Big sister is Wren. I made the mistake of mentioning his name to a midwife today and she said “ooh, that’ll be confusing”. What do people think - too similar?

I thing they're fine together, but you might want to start a seperate thread about your sib set names.

Will do, thank you!

idiotmagnet · 29/12/2022 18:45

I think it's a bonus that they sort of match! It's not like they're as matchy as say, Tess and Bess. I think it's absolutely fine.

Trez1510 · 30/12/2022 11:53

Hugo & Georgina?

Toottooot · 30/12/2022 11:54

Rayann.

user1492757084 · 30/12/2022 14:19

What about Hugo and Margaret.

HedgehogB · 13/01/2023 00:12

At least it’s not Jerry and Margot. I like Iona …
