Is Angel for a girl okay to use?

Yesterday evening my husband suggested the name Angel in case we'll have a daughter. I was pleasantly surprised because he hardly ever suggests any names. I do sort of like it because I love the sentiment behind it, and I think it's a lovely meaning.

I googled it a bit and people on the internet seem less enthusiastic about it. Do you think it's fine to use or would we not be doing her a favour? I know I shouldn't care what people think but it's so hard.

On the internet people seem to think it's better used as a nickname for Angelica and other names but Angelina, Angelica etc. don't sound the same so I find using Angel as a nickname for them a bit odd (the first syllable is different).

If we'd use a longer form which one is best?

Angelina - is this too Angelina Jolie? We do like Jolie as a name, but people told us it's too associated with her, is Angelina as well? I personally don't want a strong celeb association.

Angelica

Angela - too dated?

Angeline

Angelique

Angelia

Thanks, and sorry it got way too long. Just so pleased my husband made a suggestion.

I’ve always associated it as a boys name - but I’m a buffy fan! I’d go with a longer name and use it as a nickname. We had a very similar situation with DC2 and we have used a longer name with DH’s suggested name as a nickname and it works fine.

It reminds me of angel layer cake which is a good cake

littlebird13 · 28/11/2022 18:53

My mum said she wanted to call me angel and almost did until the day they registered me. I'm so glad she didn't.

Angelica or Angelina are much nicer

maddiemookins16mum · 28/11/2022 19:10

Nice when they’re four, not quite as nice at 52.

QueSyrahSyrah · 28/11/2022 19:26

It always reminds me of a scene on Toddlers & Tiaras.

'We called her Angelle, it's French for Angel'

Erm... it's not though. Awkward.

KirstenBlest · 28/11/2022 20:14

I'd think Angel was a boy and that it was spanish.

Angelica - Huston
Angela - nice enough but a bit 1960.
Angeline - not keen, too close to Angelina
Angelique - not keen
Angelia - makes me think of congeal

Angelica is the best from your list.

Not connected but Anjali is a beautiful name.

PicturesOfDogs · 28/11/2022 20:17

I only like Angelica pronounced like Angelina, emphasis on the LEE, not so much as Angelica from the rugrats

PicturesOfDogs · 28/11/2022 20:19

Sorry meant to add Angel is perfectly fine, I hate the snobbery surrounding names in here.

Can you imagine a lawyer or judge called X.

Yes, yes I can 🤷‍♀️

AmazingBouncingFerret · 28/11/2022 20:19

Aww like Shane and Angel from Home and Away!

pilates · 28/11/2022 20:22

It’s awful.

DuneFan · 28/11/2022 20:22

My dd is nicknamed Angel although it's nothing like her real name.

I have had comments about "angel babies" and I think it would be quite a hard name to live with.

I like Angela, it's subtler. Yes a bit 1960s but I don't like frilly names like Angelica. Would love to meet a toddler Angela!

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 28/11/2022 20:22

God no. There was a girl called Angel at a school I taught in; she was so badly behaved, really nasty to other children. The name seemed to back up the whole spoilt brat vibe.

Fundays12 · 28/11/2022 20:25

Sorry I don't like it.

KirstenBlest · 28/11/2022 20:38

@PicturesOfDogs , but it isn't pronounced like that in the UK.

I rather like it- the American soprano Angel Blue is an example of a woman with the name.

RowanAtkinsonsRubberyFace · 28/11/2022 20:41

I vote Evangeline as well. You can privately use Angel, and if she's angelic by nature all good, if not you can call her Evie or Lena or Van or Angie instead.

olivehater · 28/11/2022 20:46

Makes me think of Angel from home and away and Angelica makes me think of rug rats the cartoon.

Evangeline or Angeline are nice with Angel as a Nick name.

Wonnle · 28/11/2022 20:50

Delight as a middle name ?

BCBird · 28/11/2022 20:55

No. It not ok. What if she is nothing like her name? I think it setting children up for a fall when you give them those sort of names, e.g Chasity etc

AmazingBouncingFerret · 28/11/2022 20:19

I’m glad someone else commented this as I thought of it too 😂

AllyCatTown · 28/11/2022 21:08

If I saw it written down I would assume a man and the Spanish pronunciation. I think people would get used to it but it might be better as a nickname. Angelina Jolie will be less relevant and well known in your daughter’s generation so could work and is a nice name.

lfYouLikePInaColadas · 28/11/2022 21:13

I’d go for EvANGELine Seraphina 😇😇

momtoboys · 28/11/2022 21:20

I'm sorry. I think it is dreadful.

LavenderAndBluebells · 28/11/2022 21:26

I know a 20 year old Angel, she hates her name. It's nice if it's a nickname/short for something, but on it's own it's just not right IMO. Be a bit like calling your child fairy
