Is Irene truly dreadful?

I love the name Irene Elizabeth and I was wanting to use it. Majority of people I’ve asked like it, however there is a high percentage who don’t. Is it one of those names that you either love or hate? All opinions welcome!

Of course, I love it! But only the three syllable version.

Who the hell pronounces it with three syllables?!

Anyway, it’s an awful name. How do you look at a newborn baby and go ‘I’ll name her Irene.’ May as well call her Barbara

urbanbuddha · 28/11/2022 05:51

I like it. Wouldn’t be top of my list but I like it. And judging by the replies she’ll be the only one in the playground.

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 28/11/2022 06:15

I love it, especially pronounced with 3 syllables

VenusClapTrap · 28/11/2022 07:04

I like it. I think it’s beautiful. People just aren’t used to hearing it on children at the moment but I think it’s due a comeback. I also love Marjorie which I think is in the same camp.

In Greek the i sound is sort - like the i in fish - so i - ri - ni . Much prettier but unlikely to happen in the uk. I considered it (I’m Greek) but knew that no one would ever pronounce it properly and I don’t like the English pronunciation.

Same. I have at least 5 or 6 cousins called Irini. Now they are having grandchildren the name is being passed down. Lovely name even with 2 syllables.

Who the hell pronounces it with three syllables?!

Lots of Europeans for a start off.

KittensNotMittens · 28/11/2022 07:40

Irene Handel?

Squeezedsquash · 28/11/2022 07:44

For me it’s very like Agnes, Edith, May… all names that were of my grandmother’s generation but now popular as baby names.

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/11/2022 07:48

The song "Goodnight Irene " is our local football team (Bristol Rovers) song, so always associate it with that.

spearmintbubble · 28/11/2022 10:49

I forgot about that song - I was mainly thinking about come on Eileen and the link. My friend linked it once.

It's often pronounced Eye-Ree-Nee

I knew a lady who pronounced it this way and didn’t even realise it was ‘Irene’ at first!
I thought it was nice, I prefer it to Eye-reen.

Penguinsaregreat · 28/11/2022 18:47

It is an old name so probably due a comeback. No different to Nora or Olive and people seem to like those old names.

spearmintbubble · 29/11/2022 11:21

Thank you for all the replies. We have now agreed Irene Elizabeth Alexandra is our first choice. Once again thank you all! 🥳
