Which is the best diminutive of Edward?

I've liked Edward with Ted as the diminutive for a long time. DH said he didn't like it and much preferred Ed.

I went and thought about this and although I had my heart set on Ted, I came round to the idea of idea of Ed instead and now maybe prefer it.

Yesterday DH announced he'd been thinking about it too and he now likes Ted.

Any opinions? I know that our son may well choose his own diminutive when he's older, which is fine by us, but in the mean time we want to know what to call him once he's here! I hate decisions so definitely don't want to go down the wait the he's here and see what feels right camp. We have older children and would be confusing for them to switch between two names.

I like Ted, but beware of putting too much thought into diminutives, I know an 8 year old Edward who refuses to answer to anything but Edward despite my spending 8 years trying to bring him round to Ted or Ed.

mobear · 24/11/2022 21:32

We have an Edward who goes by Ted or Teddy. I prefer Ted. I try to avoid Ed or Eddie, but if that’s his preference when he’s older that’s fine.

Is a Bear Grylls actually make Edward.. I've just realised it might be

I wouldn’t worry too much about confusing your older children if you can’t settle on a diminutive straight away.

We also have an Edward and two other DC.

Mostly we call our Edward Edward, but he also gets called Ed, Eddie, Ted, Teddington or Tedward by me and DH.

Amazingly, our other two DC still seem to know who we’re talking about whether we’re saying Edward / Tedward / Teddington / Ed / Ted / Eddie.

Although the same sort of thing also happens with our other DC’s names.

Same here - anything goes 🤣. We also use Tederick and Tedatron! He answers to them all and doesn’t seem to mind. I’m not massively keen on his older brother’s habit of calling him ‘Eh’ though.

My dgs is Edward and as a baby he was usually Ted (never Ned which is a bit like Wally ) . He is 13 now and closed to be Ed a few years he gave me his list of reasons!

  1. easy to spell
  2. short to write
  3. has no meaning beyond the name
  4. from Ed…Ted is a toy, Ned is a donkey, Woody sounds daft, Eddie is a criminal(???)

Chose not closed

Thanks so much all, lots of food for thought!

I do find it amusing how some people can't comprehend that Ted or Ned can come from Edward. It's one of the oldest naming process in the works- I think it harms back from times when there would be so many Edwards that people would add letters to the start to differentiate, eg Ted , Ned, same for Will and Bill from William.

I think DH has done a good job of persuading me that Ed is a bit more handsome than Ted. But as some have pointed out, doesn't mean I can't call him that sometimes 😊😊

Squidward or Ed.

OliviaFlaversham · 25/11/2022 05:44

i think you’ve chosen well with Edward/Ed. Teddy is just used so so much and therefore Ted/Teds. I don’t mind popular names but this feels so overused where we are

Yerroblemom1923 · 25/11/2022 05:47

Wardle or Wardo, something a bit different.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 25/11/2022 07:03

I’ve got a cousin Edward, but he has always been Ed or Eddie. He absolutely hated being called Ted or Teddy, and I have to say that as kids we did at times do exactly that to wind him up. So, though you might like him to be called Ted, he might not!

chella2 · 25/11/2022 08:04

Ned means something horrible in Scotland. So, not that.

Ted and Ed are both nice. Maybe just wait and see what suits him. Another nickname may arise.

That's less of an issue today as there are far more names in use!

Swapping the B for W in William also avoids the nickname Willy Blush

serenghetti2011 · 25/11/2022 08:50

My grandad was Edward but was always called Ted
lovely and I think it’s really nice
classic name and Ted is sweet and it brings back nice memories for me. I think it’s nice it’s being used still

motherstongue · 25/11/2022 09:07

DS’s friend gets called Big Dee. I’m sure his parents didn’t foresee that lol.

Kanaloa · 25/11/2022 09:55

I think people can comprehend how they come from the name. They’ve just said they don’t like them.

There was one poster who wasn't able to comprehend.

Bear is awful.

I'm not that keen on Edward but love Ned

OttersMayHaveShiftedInTransit · 25/11/2022 10:12

Ned derives from 'mine Ed'

Most people, then. Either way I think most people can comprehend. Most of the criticisms have been around popularity/not liking the nickname. I do still think Bear is really convoluted though, even though I can see it supposedly comes from Ed/Ted/Teddy Bear. I just think it seems like bending yourself in half to call your child a name that has nothing to do with their name.

Eddie. Like Eddie Vedder.

My 8 month old is (kind of) named after Eddie Vedder. He is a true Eddie, not an Edward, and everyone comments on how lovely his name is when they find that out. We haven't come across any other Eddies so far and it never seems to pop up on popular name lists.

stripywaterbottle · 25/11/2022 10:48

My dad is a ted. I think it's a nice name tbh.

Nannyamc · 25/11/2022 11:01

My DH is Edward called Eddie. His DF was too and called Ed. He also has an uncle who anwers to Ned. Lovely name.

Carryonmarion · 25/11/2022 11:06

I'd pick Edward nn Eddy if I were to have another boy, but that would be a medical miracle
