So, if you were going to call your baby John, would you call him Johnny, Johnnie, Jonny if he has a nickname?

There’s a John at my daughters school, absolutely everyone calls him John, siblings and friends. He’s the only John I know under the age of 50.

Johnny but when I suggested it as a name DH couldn't get past rubber Johnny.

Johnjo. I guess that usually short for John Joseph but whatever

Yeah my son gets called Jonjo sometimes as those are his middle names :)

Most of the Johns I know, and I know many, are just John.
One is John but only on BC, always known as Jack.
One Uncle John was called Sionyn (Welsh for Johnny) by some, another was Siencyn (Welsh for Jenkin)
The Jonathans I know are mostly Jon, but one is Jonny and another is Jonty.

I've only seen the spelling Johnny. The others look odd to me.

My dad was a John, and he was almost always just called John. He had one friend who sometimes called him Johnny, which he didn't actively dislike, but he never introduced himself as Johnny and no-one else ever used it as far as I know. I think most Johns are just John unless you make a conscious effort to call them something else - and for what it's worth, I quite like "just John."

My husband is John.
My mother in law sometimes calls him Jonathan.
He is not Jonathan. Birth certificate is John.
Weird in that half of the family 🤣

I know a kid registered as Max because his mother "didn't want people coming up with nicknames". She calls him Maximilian 😂

AriettyHomily · 23/11/2022 17:32

My grandad was John, known as Jack.

MerryMarigold · 23/11/2022 17:34

If it were my family he'd be called Johnno the wonno, Johnny Mcbonnyface, Johnstonian, Jonble the Womble, Jonblesale etc etc.

By 5 he'd be dying to be 'Just John'

Gummibär · 23/11/2022 18:05

Why are you even 'planning' a nickname? They may or may not evolve naturally!

MerryChristmasToYou · 23/11/2022 19:01

Are they planning a nickname? I thought they were sounding out which ones were likely. Short names are usually lengthened and long names usually shortened. Best to find out in case you don't like the nickname.

Jock

LightUpTheWoods · 23/11/2022 19:27

I know a 12 year John, just known as John.

I know many, many Johns 50-60, who are either John, or their initials "JB", "JC", or confusingly, some whose middle name is John, which is the name he is known by, but nicknamed "CJ".
