Hi 👋

Does anyone have any suggestions on boy names that you could say in Welsh and English with a possibility of spelling in Welsh?

We currently have a Wiliam and really struggling to agree on any names 🙈

Thank you 🥰

Do you want them to sound the same in English and Welsh, or just to be names with both English and Welsh versions?

Gethin and Tomos are both pretty identical in Welsh and English. Rhys / Rhodri / Dylan etc will get variations.

Lady I know has a Gethin.
I think it's lovely - obvious welsh heritage, easy to read and pronounce for English people and reminds me of gethin Jones!

BarbiesDreamHouse · 15/11/2022 21:11

I’m not Welsh but once met a Dewi and loved the name!

glassdarker · 15/11/2022 22:38

Am Welsh. Live in England. Work with a Dewi and a Geraint and I have never heard them pronounced properly in England (dewy and gerrant). As for Dylan.... not pronounced properly in England or Wales (it's not Dillon - I blame Bob and Mr Thomas).

Owen
Hugh

BertieBotts · 15/11/2022 22:44

Idris and Arwen are my favourite but there are lots!

BertieBotts · 15/11/2022 22:45

My friend's husband was Dewi and I'm afraid I always struggled to remember the pronunciation of that one. It just doesn't fit word patterns in English, even though it's very simple once you're used to it.

Whataretheodds · 15/11/2022 22:54

Definitely I'd go for names that have a fighting chance of being pronounced the same in Welsh and English - so Dylan would be out for me, for example.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/11/2022 22:54

I am English but have lived in Wales for 20 years. I like Gethin Gareth Evan or Rhys. English people can't say Geraint or Dewi. Ceri would not work in England either.

KirstenBlest · 16/11/2022 09:46

Harri
