Phillipa

We don't know the sex yet but I really like Phillipa. However I have come across a few comments along the lines of - it is just a boys name with an 'a' on the end. I also like Erica and Roberta so maybe this is just my style! The feminist in me thinks I should go for a strong stand alone girls name like Catherine or Elizabeth. I like these but not as much as Phillipa. I would appreciate any thoughts.

It's a nice name. The usual English spelling is Philippa.

Coastalbus · 14/11/2022 11:18

Yes I realised I spelt it wrong when I posted this but thought it was too late to change it. I might be able to edit it. Thanks and I am glad you like it.

Love Philippa and the nickname Pippa too but DH not keen sadly! I also know that Pippa is always slated for not travelling well as it means something rude in several languages. This doesn’t bother me but it may bother you.

Coastalbus · 14/11/2022 11:20

Ok thanks and I will look into this as we have family in Europe.

it is a fine name.
i also like roberta v much, even more so.
erica not so much, but that's maybe because i am quite traditional, and erica sounds continental to me.
i think you have good taste, and whatever you and your husband choose will be fine.
i also like catherine, elizabeth; both of which will become more popular i think because of the recent royal events.
all the best.
robert is good for a boy !
and philip.

KirstenBlest · 14/11/2022 11:54

I know several Philippas. Most are Phil for short and only one is Pippa.

fairycupcakes · 14/11/2022 12:02

Roberta is lovely - love the nn Bobbie/y
I also think Erica is really pretty and funnily enough I don’t associate Erica with Eric at all 🤷🏼‍♀️

I liked Philippa until I heard on here a while ago about Pippa being a rude word in some European countries and it put me off ☹️

TalkisChips · 14/11/2022 12:54

There are a couple of Erica’s at my children’s school.

I like Philippa and Pippa, less keen on Roberta, I don’t like Bobbie as a nickname.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 14/11/2022 20:22

It's not my kind of name but if it's the name you like the most then it's the name you should go for. You shouldn't pick a name you don't like as much in the name of feminist principles. Philippa is a no nonsense kind of name, and I'm sure you can raise her to be a strong and capable, and fun!, young woman.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 14/11/2022 20:24

Erica is lovely and I have a Railway Children shaped soft spot for Roberta/Bobbie.

RambamThankyouMam · 14/11/2022 20:58

Horrific name. Sounds like a fish flopping about on a dock.

Pippa means blowjob in greek.

soulinablackberrypie · 15/11/2022 11:14

I like it (spelt Philippa) but I would never choose it, specifically because it is so often misspelt in various ways.

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/11/2022 12:23

Philippa has a long as distinguished history, nothing unfeminist about it.

I like it a lot - strong and elegant (works better than Philip IMO). Pippa is a sweet nn and many people use it happily despite it’s meaning in other languages

Quite like Erica too.

I do hope you’re feeling better this morning.

Hidingawaytoday · 15/11/2022 12:28

I really like it, very underused imo.

Hobbesmanc · 15/11/2022 12:38

Philippa was a medieval queen of England so it's a name with heritage.

I never thought of Erica being a feminine Eric. I always thought it was a flower name. The Latin for Heather.

17caterpillars1mouse · 15/11/2022 12:54

I really like Phillipa NN Pip. It sounds strong and sassy to me, but then I also like Benjamina, Alberta, Georgette, Henrietta and Nigella.

I absolutely adore Roberta NN Bobbie though it's so gorgeous.

Coastalbus · 15/11/2022 20:12

Thanks for all the answers. The meaning of Pippa in some countries does concern me but my husband doesn't think it matters as many words and names mean different things in different countries. We are now very keen on Erica too so at the moment we are deciding between Philippa and Erica.
