Will Agnes always be Aggie?

Love Agnes and keep coming back to it, don't like Aggie/Ness/Nessie. Should I just put it out of my head?

Yes it most likely will! Don’t use a name if you don’t like the usual nick names

ApolloandDaphne · 10/11/2022 21:42

My DM is Agnes but has always been called Nancy. It is a fairly common NN for Agnes.

savehannah · 10/11/2022 21:42

You will never be able to control what others call your child I'm afraid. My parents didn't like the "normal" nn for my name and never used it but age 16, a new group of friends started using it, and now everyone calls me it.

Isahlo · 10/11/2022 21:44

I know 3 Agnes's
2 Nancy's and an essie

EspeciallyD · 10/11/2022 21:45

It's my middle name and I was called Ugly Aggie at primary school. I never use it now and hate the name.

Moonflower12 · 10/11/2022 21:52

There is an Agnes at my DD's school and she is always Agnes.

User65412 · 10/11/2022 22:01

I know an Agnes and she's only known as Agnes! Lovely name.

Changingplace · 10/11/2022 22:03

I know an Agnes and she is always just Agnes, it’s never actually occurred to me that there’s typical nic names for it!!

Kite22 · 10/11/2022 22:06

I can only think of one Agnes I know (she'd be about 20 now).
She's only ever been called Agnes as far as I've ever heard.

blowthehouse · 10/11/2022 22:15

Grown up Agnes here. I've always HATED the name. I felt it old fashioned and dated. However, it does seem to be making a small bid for popularity in recent years and there seem to be lots of little ones with the name.

I always wanted to have the French pronounced version - much more glamorous. My nicknames were always and still are Ag, Aggie, Azzie, Ags, Agsie. Two family members call me Azzie and I love that one because it sounds cool! Grin

AreolaGrande · 10/11/2022 22:22

I went to school with an Agnes nn Aggie and even as a child I found both iterations very harsh and unpleasant to the ear.

It doesn't even have the retro cool angle that makes people like names like Edith, Elsie etc. It's just.......bad.

Ness/ie = you'll never find a nessie in the zoo. Don't think comparisons to a lake-dwelling beast are great for a wee girl imo.

TowerStork · 10/11/2022 22:27

I like Agnes. It's already short.

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/11/2022 23:58

No - I know an Agnes and she is just that

Most Alices are Alice rather than Ally

I really like Agnes, it is somehow slightly austere but also warm

EspeciallyD · 11/11/2022 09:57

Most Alices (and most Alisons) I know are Ally or Ali.

emmathedilemma · 11/11/2022 10:00

I think no matter what you use and stick to when she's younger, ultimately friends and even colleagues will use nicknames as she gets older. My brother has a name that was never shortened by family or school friends but all his uni mates use a shortened version.

EspeciallyD · 11/11/2022 10:12

Yes, setting aside my hatred for this particular name, we were careful to choose names that we liked all the common shortened versions of as you never know what will end up being used.

TaraRhu · 11/11/2022 13:55

In Scotland she'd been Senga..

TalkisChips · 11/11/2022 14:00

I really dislike this name, it’s so harsh sounding but Aggie is worse. Plus Aggy means aggravated.

midsomermurderess · 11/11/2022 21:48

As above, Senga, so, it could be worse.
