Baby names

Baby girl - Sonia, Georgie…

Half way through pregnancy and started thinking of a name for our DD2

Had a big challenge with our first.

we don’t agree on most names, I also don’t like most, or I move on quickly…

this is what I have on so far, have no preference atm and don’t know how much I will still like them by the time the baby is born:

Olive - to me it sounds like a name more for a quiet, introvert girl?
Sasha - bold
Sonia (would it have to be Sonja in uk to be easier here?)
Nikita - a wild throw - I like Nikki too, but what would be the long name for it?
Sorina - it’s pronounced So-ree-nah - would it be pronounced differently or misspelled?
Georgie - would she be called Georgie Porgie, how popular is this rhyme still?? Can I give her a nickname as first name? Would she like it by the time she’s a teenager? It sounds like a very fun name to have, to me.

any other names that you can think of, similar or inspired by the above? Thanks

Olive - this is fine. I like how olive trees are a symbol of peace and I love the trees and olives. But it's a bit odd that it's something to eat and lots of people hate olives. Also next to all of the Olivias and Olivers it doesn't feel exciting and it will date quickly along with the other two names. It's sort of like being named Stefania in the 70s or 80s when there were lots of Stevens, Stephens and Stephanies. It still sounds dated even though it was never that common.

Sasha - I feel like this sounds dated (80s/90s) due to it being so similar to Natasha and Keisha and having the Sh-sound that now feels dated and reminds me of Shannon, Shirley etc.

Sonia - I guess this is also dated but I think it's cute!

Nikita - I don't know if it bothers you but this is a masculine name in Russia. On a girl it goes with the names that make me think of bars, beer, smoke, alcohol. Sort of like Lola.

Sorina - it's correct, it's Romanian. I think it means "sun". It's pretty. You could also use Serena but that's a different name completely.

Georgie - this also feels past its prime because of all the Georgias and Georginas who were called this in the past.

I'd pick Sonia or Sorina.

What about Nicole instead of Nikita?

CristinaNov182 · 08/11/2022 15:36

@caitlinrose thank you! Good observations

I know Nikita is a boys name pretty much everywhere else apart from Uk, France. It’s of Greek origin and means victorious. It has been used in Greece, Russia, Romania, etc, but don’t think it’s that popular now. That doesn’t bother me but yes, not sure if it’s a good one regardless.

My DH thinks Sorina will be misunderstood or misspelled as Serena in uk. Though it sounds quite different to me too.

I like Sonia but he doesn’t.

I like Sasha but not overly keen. I don’t find it that similar with the other “sh” names, nor do I think it has ever been that popular?

@Milkyway00 nicole makes me think of Nicole Kidman and I don’t like the actress (for no specific reason)

I love Sasha and Nikita. I agree that Sorina will be misheard and misspelled as Serena all the time, so I’d give that a swerve. How about:

Simone
Nadia
Sarita

Olive - it just make me think of Olive on On The Buses and Olive Oyl
Sasha - lovely
Sonia - don't spell it Sonja in the UK
Nikita - Kruschev. Russian man's name. Nicky/Nikki is a bit 1960s
Sorina - Soreen malt loaf, will get called Serena, Serina, Sarina
Georgie - might be best to put Georgia on the BC.

Nikita was used for girls in the UK after the Elton John single was popular.
Sonia seems a bit middle-aged.

Mumofgirls2017 · 08/11/2022 21:42

Olive is my favourite. Find others a bit dated.

daria
iris
sadie
sienna
soraya
stella
kaia
samara
sofia
maya
jasmine

I only like Olive and Sasha.

How about Sadie, Anya, Tania, Annika, Saskia, Cleo, Anouska, Rosa

Spookypig · 08/11/2022 23:37

I only know Russian men named Nikita and I think Sorina sounds like a food product.

Thank you everyone - I like your suggestions. Lots to think about. I don’t know how ppl find it easy to name their children!

Of your list I would pick Sasha! It’s nice and different to all the other names out there at the moment ☺️

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/11/2022 21:15

Olive -

only in a salad

Sasha -

I like it, quite sassy, a bit 70s throwback. I would personally use it as a diminutive of Alexandra, but it’s well established as a full name

Sonia (would it have to be Sonja in uk to be easier here?) -

it’s more often Sonia in the Uk. It’s also quite 70s. It’s one of those names I think sounds quite lumpy in a lot of English accents (like Jeanette), so I wouldn’t - but there was poor girl at my 70s primary known as Soggy Sonia because she was always wetting her knickers, so I might have some bias..

Nikita - a wild throw - I like Nikki too, but what would be the long name for it?

I think you’d have to call her Nicoletta or something as it’s a boy’s name in so much of the world. Natalia, Natasha or Nadia might be easier alternatives, all of which have a 70s vibe

Sorina - it’s pronounced So-ree-nah - would it be pronounced differently or misspelled?

I think Serena is a bit nicer and will be a whole lot easier.

Georgie - would she be called Georgie Porgie, how popular is this rhyme still?? Can I give her a nickname as first name? Would she like it by the time she’s a teenager

It’s been quite popular as a nn for Georgia / Georgina / Georgiana, so you don’t need to worry about rhymes. But no don’t use it as a full name - it’s too babyish, apart from the fact it’s unisex.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 09/11/2022 21:18

I like Sorina, but it will be constantly misspelled and mispronounced. Soraya is a beautiful name for a girl too.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/11/2022 21:23

Alternatives -

Anoushka
Tamara
Selina
Saskia
Sabrina
Serena
Safina
Nadia
Natalia / Natasha
Francesca
Katrina / Katerina / Katya
Anya
Annalisa
Janina (as long as you don’t mind people in the UK saying Jah-nee-nuh rather than Yah-nee-nah)

Much prefer Georgie
