First syllable. Have you seen the BBC version of Malory Towers?

pitterypattery00 · 06/11/2022 20:21

First syllable. I'm friends with one.

MrsWarboysHandGrenade · 06/11/2022 20:23

First syllable. Like with Darren

First syllable. Like with Darren

Same for me. I remember reading it and thinking the poshest and best name in the world was Alicia. I idolised her. Looking back, weren’t they all just bloody awful?

Have you seen the BBC version of Malory Towers?

Mallory Towers was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this thread! I had no idea the BBC were doing this

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/11/2022 20:35

First

alexdgr8 · 06/11/2022 20:35

sounds like a surname to me.
wouldn't be my choice.
but it's inoffensive.

Sandysandwich · 06/11/2022 20:36

DA-ruhl, like Darren

slightlybonkersmum · 06/11/2022 20:38

I have a friend who is spelt Darryl, lovley name. And you pronounce it the way it is spelt

bcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyza · 06/11/2022 20:47

That name is close to my husbands name.

I would spell it as Darryl

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 06/11/2022 22:48

Rhymes with barrel.

Yika · 07/11/2022 00:45

DA-rul

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 07/11/2022 12:15

Is there a thread to talk about the BBC show? I have lots of opinions.

And first syllable emphasis.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 07/11/2022 17:12

Thanks all!

We are not having a baby - this was off the back of seeing the BBC show. I knew a Darrell at university who pronounced it with emphasis on second syllable. I never really liked that but figured it was her name, so intrigued to hear pronunciation on BBC.

Darryl/ Darren are mostly male names, no?

I think they’re more or less entirely male names - the Blyton character is sort of named after Blyton’s real life husband! So a man. Maybe in the book Darrell is named after her father - do we ever find out his name?

soulinablackberrypie · 09/11/2022 21:14

First syllable for me, and I have never seen the programme, and just guessed at the pronunciation when I read the books 40-odd years ago.

Slightly off topic, I always did find it odd that Darrell had such an androgynous, surnamey name (at a time when other girls were still being named Daphne and Jean!) and her sister had such a frilly, girly one. I'd love to know whether the author imagined a back story to that or just plucked two names out of the air.

bogo · 10/11/2022 14:28

I know a male Darryl, rhyming with barrel. I've never heard the other pronunciation.
