The names Cassian and Caspar...

Can you tell me, if you heard of a little boy named this, what would it make you think of/does either 'say' a particular demographic or type of parent/family to you?

Or if you know of any, what are they like?
Thank you!

Did you mean to type Cassius or Caspian? I've not heard of Cassian, but I absolutely adore all of those names. Caspar was on my shortlist for my now 17 year old, and I was dismayed to see it gradually become more and more popular over the years before I finally had a boy. I'd say as a result Caspar/Casper is more working class than the other, but not obviously so. That might be to do with it going mainstream with the likes of the Radford's. I wouldn't say it is 'down market' to use a phrase I see on here 😂. But it is more neutral than Cassian/Cassius etc which have a middle class ring to them, but that isn't always the case. I am working class and I have one with an ultra middle class name, one with a down-market name, and one that is neutral. I just chose names I really liked the sound of.

GeorgeQuentin · 03/11/2022 12:56

Both nice names, possibly more middle class. Both are more 'unusal' names so people will make of that what they will, whether they think you are a hippy or try hard etc. If you think they are lovely names, you have to be the sort of person that kind of assumption rolls off your back. That goes for any non top 200 name, it takes a bit more self assurance to go with your own taste.
I'd assume Caspar might have some Polish heritage, as have met a few from there. Also know a non polish Caspar (although he might be Casper) he and family are nice, normal.

VenusClapTrap · 03/11/2022 12:59

I think they’re both quite neutral. Personally, I prefer Cassius and Caspian, although I do like Caspar.

CastleTower · 03/11/2022 13:22

I know a Kaspar with German links.

Caspian is also nice.

@user375242
Didn't mean to type Cassius, no! As lovely as Cassius is, I've personally ruled it out as spend a lot of time in USA and a fair amount of people there associate it with black heritage/are aware that Mohammad Ali changed his name from this as he hated the name and considered it his 'slave name'
Can I ask, did you use an (even more) rare name once it came time to name DS because of increase in popularity? As I'd still consider it pretty unusual! ranked 219 for Casper and 509 for Caspar, for 2021, seems inching up rather than a sudden upward trajectory
Cassian burst on the rankings in 2016 presumably because of Star Wars movie with a main character named this, my biggest hangup on it is that people will think of the Star Wars character/that it has 'nerdy' vibes now because of that...something I'd quite like to avoid tbh. Someone I asked (in their 40s, if it matters) said it sounds 'Game of Thrones'ish!

Caspar is Germania to me. I love both names.

Germanic, oops.

flowerdebate · 03/11/2022 13:23

@GeorgeQuentin do any of them that you know go by Cas?

I know a Cassian (known as Cass)
Lovely name, I think it's my favourite over Caspar. I don't like Cassius at all

GeorgeQuentin · 03/11/2022 13:26

I'm a star wars nerd so I can tell you Cassian Andor has his own series out. It's split fans though so not sure if that will influence popularity.

The Casper we know is mostly Cas.

PeekAtYou · 03/11/2022 13:30

I know Casper makes some people thinking Friendly Ghost but I only know Eastern European families who use Kaspar.
Your names make me think Prince Caspian from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
Star Wars names don't bother me. I can't imagine boys called Luke are asked if they are named after Luke Skywalker

Flowerpicker1 · 03/11/2022 21:04

Can't get over the ghost link with Caspet. Caspian I heard once yesterday at a playgroup. It wasn't middle class. But I prefer it to Caspar.

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/11/2022 11:25

I like Cassian best of all those names

The one I know is Cass.

I’d say it would have had quite a rarified feel when he was a kid, but with the growing popularity of Casper / Cassius, it wouldn’t so much now.

Nice choice!

flowerdebate · 07/11/2022 08:31

Thanks all! Decided to go with Caspar
