We are thinking of Matthew for our DS due in January. We have a two DD Elizabeth (Beth) What do you think?
Also suggestions for middle names .

I like it. It's a classic and timeless name, IMO.
It will get shortened to Matt by his friends, though, so make sure you are OK with that.

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/11/2022 15:03

It's nice. And unusual right now.

Do you have a family name for a middle name - I think that usually works best

Otherwise perhaps Matthew Alexander

RambamThankyouMam · 02/11/2022 15:12

Matt is a terrible name, which is what he'd probably be called.

twilightcafe · 02/11/2022 15:14

You won't go far wrong with Matthew.

Classic, underused and a name that will see your son through to adulthood.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 02/11/2022 15:15

It's a good, strong name. I love it.

DinaofCloud9 · 02/11/2022 15:16

It's a bit dull and boring.

UpUpUpAway · 02/11/2022 15:19

I have a Matthew, he never gets called Matt. I obviously love it congratulations!

Aquamarine1029 · 02/11/2022 15:21

Not keen, and I hate Matt.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/11/2022 15:21

Matthew is a strong name that is not overused and will mature well with your boy. Unlike the twee Alfies, Reggies and Teddys that are everywhere now. I think Matthew James or Matthew David would work well.

BabyMoonPie · 02/11/2022 15:32

It's traditional but uncommon so it's easy to spell and pronounce but he's unlikely to be one of many with the same name in his nursery or school class. If my daughter had been a boy she would have been Matthew Darwin

Rockingcloggs · 02/11/2022 15:49

Love it and I've never met a Matthew that I haven't liked!!

Crikeyalmighty · 02/11/2022 16:01

@Rockingcloggs I might make an exception for Matt Hancock- but yes I like traditional names myself

toastofthetown · 02/11/2022 16:09

Matthew is fine. It’s pretty dated and crashingly dull to me, but it’s inoffensive.

I think Matthew pairs will with a more interesting middle name than something very standard like James. Here are some from my list.
Matthew Aloysius
Matthew Aurelian
Matthew Casimir
Matthew Jago
Matthew Lucien
Matthew Raphael

Asher33 · 02/11/2022 16:11

A friend has a Matthew James

sopeas · 02/11/2022 16:12

Matthew is a great name, a classic.

for middle names why don’t you use a family name?

my suggestions:

Matthew James
Matthew Christopher
Matthew Alexander
Matthew Henry
Matthew Oscar
Matthew Oliver
Matthew Thomas
Matthew Anthony
Matthew Jasper

Peridot1 · 02/11/2022 16:14

I love it but I’m biased. It always gets classed as dull on here. Mine was always Matthew growing up but his friends call him Matt and he prefers Matt. I am fine with that as I like it. Well until Matt Hancock I did anyway!

Rockingcloggs · 02/11/2022 16:18

Crikeyalmighty · 02/11/2022 16:01

Thankfully I've never met Matt Hancock so I'm pretending he doesn't exist!

LizzieBet14 · 02/11/2022 16:19

My DS is Matthew (15) and hates it when people try and shorten it to Matt or Matty.

jjeoreo · 02/11/2022 16:22

I love it. So nice with Elizabeth

SuTissue · 02/11/2022 16:23

I like it a lot. I’m not sure about a middle name but I suggest maybe don’t go for another overtly biblical name especially Mark, Luke or John!

soulinablackberrypie · 02/11/2022 20:22

An all-time favourite of mine and I also think it goes really well with Elizabeth. I don't have any problem with Matt - I don't think I've ever met an unlikeable Matt. If anything, I might expect an adult Matthew who didn't shorten his name to be a bit stand-offish. But I like Matthew better for a little boy.

It sounds as if you like traditional names with a bit of gravitas so how about:

Matthew Joseph
Matthew Thomas
Matthew William
Matthew Robert
Matthew Stephen
Matthew Dominic
Matthew Henry (oh, that's been suggested already - two votes then!)

Dassams · 02/11/2022 20:25

I don't like the sound of Matthew. And hate Matt.

3littleloves · 02/11/2022 20:36

Totally biased here as I have a Matthew but I love the name and find it timeless and classic and quite uncommon where I live right now. Always goes by Matthew, no shortening to Matt or matty which I don't like as much x

BellaLaStrange · 02/11/2022 20:48

Thank you all. Lots of great suggestions for a middle name also.xx

My 21 year old is called matthew James so I’m biased in that I think it’s a great name however his friends shortened it to Matt from an early age and he refers to himself as Matt 🙈
