Ada or Edie

Can't decide which one I prefer. I'm not fussed that Edie is traditionally a nickname and wouldn't use a full name (Edith/Eden) on birth certificate.

Thanks

Edna and Doris are awful! Sorry… I don’t think a teenager would thank you for those.

Chomolungma · 02/11/2022 16:55

Both nice but I prefer Ada.

CrimsonThunder · 02/11/2022 16:58

Love Edie....not so keen on Edna. But can I throw Edina into the mix - she could be Eddie, Edie or even Edna (at a stretch) .

Astrabees · 02/11/2022 16:58

Edie Sedgwick - beautiful but tragic.
Ada - Les Dawson and the Cissie and Ada characters. I prefer Edie.

toomanysausages · 02/11/2022 17:51

Old lady names are becoming very popular so not sure if you wanted one that was unusual or more trendy. I think Edie is a nicer sounding name than Ada. Although I have heard of more little girls called ada.

APurpleSquirrel · 02/11/2022 17:55

I love Ada - DS would have been an Ada if he'd been a girl.
Not keen on Edie - DDs best friend is called Edith & is never called Edie.
My grandmothers were Edna & Hilda - not keen on Edna, but Hilda has grown on me a bit after seeing the graphic novels/cartoon.

Edie by a mile.
Also like PP's suggestion of Edina.

Foxtrot101 · 02/11/2022 18:13

I really don't see the appeal of Ada, but I think Edie is lovely.

ashitghost · 03/11/2022 00:01

I have a 15 year old Edie and it’s never even been in the top 100 since then, so definitely not millions of them.

It is definitely not pronounced the same as Eddie.

DramaAlpaca · 03/11/2022 00:06

I like Edie best of the two.

I prefer Ava to Ada, but Ada is OK.

Zalturka · 03/11/2022 00:50

If you can't decide how about Sadie ? It's a mix of both (you get the "Ad" of Ada and the "die" of Edie).

EdgeOfACoin · 03/11/2022 05:45

I love Edie.

And please ignore the PP who suggested spelling it Eadie or Eedie!

Theconceptoftime · 03/11/2022 06:08

All if the younger children I know have such similar sounding names. Eve, Edie, Eva, Ava, Ada ect, I know you say popularity doesn't bother you. When they are in school and the whole classes names just jumble into each other you may end up regretting it though. They are all lovely names on their own but when they are all together none of them have that special feel. It also gets a bit of a mouthful!

KangarooKenny · 03/11/2022 07:17

Edie.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 03/11/2022 07:29

I love Edie, it's my nieces name.

But I also love Ada and Edna. Also Ena which was my Grandma's name.

RobinRobinMouse · 03/11/2022 07:34

Both are so beautiful, though I think Edith is too, definitely not Eden which sounds awful.

VenusClapTrap · 03/11/2022 08:17

I don’t like Ada. No good reason, I just dislike it. I love Edith but I can’t get behind Edie as a stand-alone name. It’s just not substantial enough. So I’d go for Edna or Edina.

bakehimawaytoys · 03/11/2022 08:29

They're both a bit meh and will date IMO. This generation's Susan or Janet. There is an Ada, an Edith and an Enid (!) in DD's class at nursery.

spiderlight · 03/11/2022 13:32

I've loved Edie since the Cult song in the late 80s. Ada is a bit too old-lady-in-headscarf for me.

I love Edith nn Edie, it names me think of Edie Sedgwick.

I only know one Ada, she’s 10.

Donetrying1 · 15/01/2023 21:15

This thread made me smile as my 2 granddaughters are:
Edie (short for Edith) and
Ada!!
l think they are both lovely☺️

RuthW · 15/01/2023 22:02

Ada. Edie is a shortened name.
