Elliott or Elliot

Baby boy expected any day, settled on the name Elliott/Elliot but can't decide on the spelling. Elliott looks balanced/symmetrical & is how I always thought it was spelt due to a school friend being spelt that way, until I researched the name recently, but conscious people see if as a 'surname' look & that Elliot is more the forename name. Any advice appreciated xx

I have an Elliot as Elliott to me looks like a surname!

rosiebl · 28/10/2022 23:44

My DS is Elliot. I think Elliott looks like a surname too.

BattleofBeamfleot · 28/10/2022 23:53

I don't know anyone with the surname, so having two Ts looks more balanced to me - I'd be more likely to spell that version correctly.

toastofthetown · 29/10/2022 08:42

According to the 2021 stats, Elliot is the most common in 89th, then Elliott in 107th (100 fewer), and Eliot in 1290th. All things being equal I’d go for the most popular spelling as that’s more likely to be most people’s default, though Elliot is likely to be a name where you’d be ‘Elliot with one T’ or ‘Elliott with two Ts’.

Personally, I was very good friends with an Elliot growing up so that’s the spelling which looks right to me.

Ah, I hadn’t realised one was seen more as a surname and one more as a first. It’s a lovely name! I much prefer Elliott because it looks balanced. Wishing you well with your upcoming arrival OP 👶🏻

Dassams · 29/10/2022 09:04

I prefer Eliott with one T

Otherwise it shortens to Ellie

NeedToKnow101 · 29/10/2022 09:05

Elliot

FayCarew · 29/10/2022 10:34

Elliott. I see Elliot as a surname.
Definitely not Eliott.

EmmaAmeliasMum · 29/10/2022 10:37

We put Elliott on our 4 year old's BC but quickly found we were constantly correcting people on the spelling - so changed it to Elliot when he was 8 months. Don't regret it for a second. Go with Elliot - it's much nicer in every way. Great choice! 🤩

RambamThankyouMam · 29/10/2022 12:30

Somehow Elliot looks neater. Or Eliot.

caitlinrose · 29/10/2022 12:55

It's on our list as Elliott.

I agree that Elliott looks more symmetrical.

The original form is Elliott so Elliot is a spelling variant. I usually like to stick to the original.

Elliot also comes from the surname so it doesn't really matter. It's a surname-name no matter how you spell it.

As for the popularity, Elliott is #107 and Elliot is #89 so there's not much of a difference. No matter how you spell it he'll likely have to say "with two Ts" or "with one T".

I would pick Elliott but Elliot is fine too. I'd avoid Eliot as there is a female actress called this currently on a popular Netflix show and I also know one girl with this spelling as her middle name.

Polecat07 · 29/10/2022 12:57

Elliot

Sandysandwich · 29/10/2022 13:00

Elliot
It's my brothers name and people always write this spelling first when writing his name, he has a colleague called Elliott and apparently nobody ever writes the second T

Theoldwoman · 29/10/2022 14:44

Prefer Elliot. The double t’s look too much to me.

DramaAlpaca · 29/10/2022 14:51

Definitely Elliot

DeeDeeDaisy · 29/10/2022 15:21

I know a few Elliott's and only one Elliot. Elliott looks more balanced. Does it really matter if it's a surname as well?

loobylou10 · 29/10/2022 15:54

Mine is Elliot. Elliott is a surname imo.

Malariahilaria · 29/10/2022 16:06

Definitely Elliot. Second t looks like someone stuttered:)

Sofia1981 · 29/10/2022 23:14

Thannk you so much for the replies and comments. It really does vary and know it's individual preference too but to have an idea of people's opinions does help xx
