Can Tilly be used alone( or should it be a nn for Matilda / Otillie?

I've been trying to find a name to replace my very favourite which is Annie as I can't use it 😩 Today I thought of Tilly. Do you think it can stand alone as a name in itself or should it only be used as a nn for Matilda (which I don't really like) or Otillie which I do like but her brothers name starts with an O and said together is a mouthful.

Of course it can. There are no rules. What's the fixation on here for full names on the BC.

34and3 · 28/10/2022 06:39

Absolutely. Also Milly/ Millie.

Inasec24 · 28/10/2022 06:43

Yeah of course you can, but why not Annie?

Sager · 28/10/2022 06:58

We have a Tilly! I do really like both Matilda and Otillie though!

DuchessOfSausage · 28/10/2022 07:48

If you are only ever going to call her Tilly just call her Tilly. Annie is much nicer though.

I don't like Ottilie but the german pronuncition is ok.

OoooSweetChildOMine · 28/10/2022 08:01

Why Annie?

swingsandroundabouts222 · 28/10/2022 10:42

Yes, it's fine.
I often wish my parents had just called me the shorter version of my name as I hate it when people call me by my full name!

Cheeseandpineappleonastick · 28/10/2022 11:58

Have you thought about Natalie or Charlotte? I think Tilly could work as a nickname for those.

Billylilly · 28/10/2022 12:09

Tilly is definitely a name in its own right and a lovely one at that!

bluebird3 · 28/10/2022 12:11

It can also be short for Natalie but definitely use it on its own if you want!

liveforsummer · 28/10/2022 12:56

I prefer it as a stand alone name to the ones you've given. Not a big fan of either Matilda or Otillie

sopeas · 28/10/2022 14:09

Tilly just seems like a name for a cat/pet imo, not a bad thing but I just don’t see it as a full name for a grown woman so probably better used as a nn for something more substantial. I like your suggestion of Matilda! Then gives your dd options of nn as she grows.

VenusClapTrap · 28/10/2022 18:19

I know six Tillys. They’re a mixture of Matildas and stand-alone. They all seem to have the middle name Rose.

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 28/10/2022 18:23

We have a Tilly in our family, its actually a family name, one of those passed from great grandmother to great grand daughter.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/10/2022 21:29

I think Tilly is far too babyish to be a full name (unlike, say, Kate). It’s a sweet nn, but she might want something with more heft when she’s older.

If you don’t like Matilda, go for Ottilie. Or Millicent, Clotilde, Leticia, Nathalie / Natalia all work fine.

caitlinrose · 28/10/2022 22:08

I'd personally say no. I mean you could, but I wouldn't.

For me it really depends on the name. Ellie is fine. Jessie is fine. But Tilly doesn't work for me.

I can't say what it is, maybe that it's close to "silly"? (Lily and Millie are not, in my opinion as the T seems closer to the letter S). So I personally wouldn't want it as my full name.

Ottilie is cute and it's fine that her brothers' names start with O too as you will call her Tilly anyway.

It's a cutesy nickname not a given name. Please give the girl a full name for future options.

My son is nicknamed Gilly but he's Gilbert on his birth certificate because he won't be two forever.

Energeticenoch · 28/10/2022 22:51

Of course. No need for a longer name. Pointless

Gracelynn · 28/10/2022 23:12

What about Tilly-Ann or Tillianna. You could still use Annie for a nickname.
I've met a male Tilly short for Tertullian.

leccybill · 28/10/2022 23:22

I know lots and lots of Natalies. They all go by Nat, none of them Tilly.

I teach quite a few Tillys. What about
Trudy
Triple
Tammy

I agree with this. Often I think a 'nickname' is fine for the BC and don't understand why people prefer the BC to say Henry when the child will be always, always known as Harry etc. But some names (often girls' names) are so clearly childlike to me that I'd want to give them another version ready to grow into if they want to, and Tilly falls into that bracket for me.

I'd go for Otillie in your shoes, not least because if she outgrows Tilly she'll probably outgrow being widely referred to in the same breath as her sibling at about the same time. Smile

I know a Thilia known as Tilly.
