Alistair or Alexander

Stuck on boy names for baby no 2. Really like both but Alexander is relatively common round here and I know a couple of idiots with that name that is putting me off slightly. Worrying though that Alistair is a bit … posh I guess? Nothing wrong with that but it depends what he wants to do as a job, he might fit in better as a plumber, for example, as an Alex rather than an Alistair but I’m maybe overthinking it. Pros for Alistair - I like that it’s classic but underused and it goes beautifully with our last name. Any thoughts on either name please?

I have an Alasdair - chosen because we liked Alexander but knew too many. We’re definitely not posh! I love it, and wouldn’t swap. We have never shortened it but friends call him Ally or Al.

What's this obsession with 'poshness' Confused? What does it even mean??

Nosleepforthismum · 20/10/2022 17:50

Thanks all for your comments! I still have love for both names but Alistair is edging it a bit for me. Although, the different spellings are something to consider! We are not Scottish so I just don’t think I can get away with the traditional Gaelic spelling unfortunately but it is lovely.

As for whether it matters if it’s “posh”, obviously it doesn’t but, like most parents, I just want my kid to fit in and Alistair is not a common name where I live so I didn’t know whether it was a bit too “out there” but I’ve been pleasantly reassured by the other posters on this thread so thank you 😊.

Alistair sounds much weaker to me in comparison to Alexander.

ShakeYourFeathers · 20/10/2022 22:07
