Amice and Amity

I don't plan on using it, it's not on our list. But I watched a documentary about the Middle Ages and it mentioned the name Amice.

It's a name for girls and means something along the lines of "amity, friendship".

The documentary pronounced it am-is, so sort of like Alice with an M.

It was apparently one of the most popular women's names in medieval times.

So I'm just curious what do you think of Amice and Amity?

Amity is gorgeous. I'm not too fussed about Amice all I can see is A mice.
Never mind the look of the name most importantly I don't like the sound

S25 · 17/10/2022 22:43

Amity immediately made me think of Amityville horror 😟

PatriciaHolm · 17/10/2022 22:44

Amity makes me think of Jaws! An Amice is a-mice in my head...

FortunesFavour · 17/10/2022 22:45

Yes, I’m afraid Amity immediately calls to mind Jaws and Amityville horror!

Bestofthree · 17/10/2022 22:46

No

Joolsin · 17/10/2022 22:46

Amity means horror to me, so no.

Amice, I would think this was Italian and pronounce A-mee-chay. Don't really like it either.

scrivette · 17/10/2022 22:55

I love Amity.

Iwantamarshmallowman · 17/10/2022 23:06

Amity reminds me of the film divergent.

DramaAlpaca · 17/10/2022 23:26

I think there's a very good reason both those names died out, both are awful.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 17/10/2022 23:28

Cal amity

Exactly what popped into my head when I read it

Snap.

I quite like Amity though.. but I couldn’t bring myself to use it for this reason

Amice - no, just doesn’t sound like a name / makes me think of works like malice.

Jocelyn, Ethelyn, Merryn, Igraine , Cecily, Jessamy, Ione (Eye-oh-nee), Selene (sell-re-nee), Ianthe, Lois, Ines, Carys, Sabrina, Lowena might be other opinions

SandboxSalsa · 17/10/2022 23:38

As an Anglican priest I warn you that an amice to me is a liturgical garment - same pronunciation. That’s probs a niche reaction though…

Amice to me would be am-ee-say. One of those names is going to be constantly mispronounced or attract jokes about rodents, the other ones going to get references about the psycho who slaughtered 6 members of his family

Pantspiewithvodka · 17/10/2022 23:49

Amice makes me think of malice. It also just doesn't sit right, like it's not a word that is constructed correctly. Keep trying to read it differently and feeling off every time I come back to what it says. Amity is half a word, incomplete, as someone suggested above with calamity. Name brain does not compute.

Aldith · 18/10/2022 00:06

I like Amice and a similar medieval name Avis and would use Avis if DH would allow. I am not fond of Amity but for me it’s an association problem as I used know a challenging child called Amity.

sausage767 · 18/10/2022 00:11

I don't like either, and agree with the Amityville connotation, that's leaving a child open to a lifetime of teasing.

How about Aimee (just Amy really but with more of a French 'ami' feel) or Dimity?

I know lovely girls with both those names.

SummerCarnival · 18/10/2022 00:51

Someone suggested Igraine??? That's literally migraine without the M.

And no to bother your names op. Sorry!

nelliebear8 · 18/10/2022 07:04

Love love love Amity. Not a fan of how Amice sounds.

dream28 · 18/10/2022 12:24

I prefer Amicia and Amy. Really wish to find some variation of this name that is more easier to wear, but isn't common as Amy.

ladycarlotta · 18/10/2022 16:11

I love them both but asked here about Amity once before and the overwhelming response was Amityville Horror. I don't make that connection myself but I get that lots of people will. Sad times for us both, OP!

Would you consider Annis/Annice? Variant of Agnes and also popular in the late middle ages and early modern period.

Whichwhatnow · 18/10/2022 20:16

A friend is called Amice (but pronounced more like Am-ees) and it really suits her. She's very cool 😎.

I actually really like the sound of Amity but I think the Amityville connection may be too strong!

Longdarkcloud · 21/10/2022 21:43

Annis also much used in the Middle Ages is very like Amice. It is an alternative version of Agnes which I find rather harsh withe g sound.
