Penelope and Poppy

We already have DD1 Penelope. Would you consider Poppy to be too similar sounding for DD2?

No, but I'd not like one child having such a short name compared to the other.

Dahliasrule · 12/10/2022 12:13

I love the name Poppy. …but a lot of dogs are called Poppy, ours is, because it is close to the sound of puppy.

No, but I'd not like one child having such a short name compared to the other.

Similar feeling here.

One child with a classic name from which nn's can be derived, and the other with a modern name that cannot be shortened seems imbalanced to me.

I think names like these sit well with Penelope: Eleanora, Theodora, Constance etc. etc.

Good luck in choosing a name!

SleepingStandingUp · 12/10/2022 12:16

Also agree on the length thing. If she was BC as Penny then Penny and Poppy wouldn't be so bad but they don't seem to match. Not that they have to, they're individuals who'll grow up and have their own lives. But still...

Dreamingcats · 12/10/2022 12:26

I think Penelope and Poppy are not too similar but Penny and Poppy are.

I disagree with pp that siblings need to have names of similar length or style.

I have a similar dilemma! I really like Penelope and Jennifer but Penny and Jenny sounds ridiculous!

S25 · 12/10/2022 12:27

Love Poppy ❤️ Such a sweet name.

I don’t see a problem with Penelope & Poppy. I guess I can see where other PP are coming from with one being longer and more classic and the other being more modern but they will grow up to be individuals… their names don’t have to match so just go with a name you love ☺️

tickticksnooze · 12/10/2022 12:29

Yes. I thought this was going to be an either/or decision post.

The sounds in those names overlap too much for my liking.

Hadtocomment · 12/10/2022 12:34

They do seem a bit similar but also Poppy gets a much less elaborate name. On some sites they suggest Poppy as a shortening of Penelope which could be even more confusing. Penny and Poppy could be confusing.

Someone suggested Constance. Connie could be nice with Penny/Penelope. Or if you want another Greek inspired name there's Hebe and Iris and Ianthe and Selene. I wouldn't do Phoebe even though it sounds quite different from Penelope. What about Cassandra? If you like Poppy what about things like Maisie or Daisy? I quite like Penelope and Hebe or Penelope and Iris (although that's very popular isn't it?)

Treaclemine · 12/10/2022 12:36

Speaking as someone with the first name you've picked, I liked finding out the antiquity of it - rushed back from Sunday School to tell Mum that a boy there had a story about his name in the Bible (David) and Mum telling me there was a story about my name in another bok, which was older than the Bible. I would go for something of similar age. I know some people get called Cassandra, but that seems a little doomy. Helen is too short. Electra is too weird. Pandora might suit, and can be told in a way that doesn't make her an empty headed idiot. I called my bear Persephone, as a match for me, but being named for the victim of abduction and then Queen of the Dead might be a tad odd. On the Latin side, there's Camilla, but better read her up. Or you could go for someone more recent who did something heroic so there's something interesting about the name. Matilda comes to mind - the queen escaping across the snow, or telling such dreadful lies or in the Roald Dahl stories. Not helpful, I expect, but my sister with a single syllable felt it.

deeperthanallroses · 12/10/2022 12:40

Penelope and Jemima? Pen & Jem
Philippa? Penny and Pippa
Imogen? Penny and Immy
Hermione?
Margot?

which is to say I don’t think penelope and poppy work that well as sibling names, although both are nice names in their own right

Billylilly · 12/10/2022 12:54

Not sure I love Penny and Poppy together. Ultimately you’ll not have any say if Penelope gets shortened to Penny.

I love PP suggestion of Penelope and Imogen or Penelope and Margot though.

Loulou1712 · 12/10/2022 12:56

I think it depends on whether you shorten penelope, if she's always penelope or nelly then poppy works, but I don't like penny and poppy together.
My eldest is penelope so naturally I think that's a great choice 😂
I also don't like giving siblings the same initial, just personal preference to help them feel more individual x

Mummummummumyyyyy · 12/10/2022 12:59

i think too many ps! It’s a bit of a tongue twister.

Dogtooth · 12/10/2022 13:04

I'd go for different sounds. Helena, Katarina, Clarissa, Zoe, Alexandra, Athena - all a bit Greek(ish)

Penny and Poppy is a bit daft sounding.

Pamparam · 12/10/2022 13:06

I know a Penelope and she goes by Poppy so no!

Puddlepup · 12/10/2022 14:29

@Treaclemine This is so helpful thank you! Funnily enough Matilda is top of my list and I also really like Pandora but think it’s a bit tricky with it being a shop and probably better known for that than being a name.

Thanks everyone! I agree but just wanted to get some more opinions to show DH! I do like Poppy but don’t think it goes with Penelope at all.

Thanks for other suggestions! I like Matilda, Imogen, Constance and Jemima.

DD1 does get Penny from other people but rarely from us. It’s either Penelope or something silly completely unrelated to her name.

Dalekjastninerels · 12/10/2022 14:34

I like both names; but together they sound like children's book characters in my mind.
Penelope and Poppy Go To The Park - that sort of thing.

DramaAlpaca · 12/10/2022 22:11

Penelope is gorgeous.

Poppy just doesn't go with it, it's not the length it's the style. Poppy is cutesy, twee and a bit silly sounding, like a noise rather than a name.

Penelope is elegant and sophisticated. I'd feel short changed if I was her sister and called Poppy.

Matilda goes very well, a similar sort of strong, elegant name. You could go for Matilda Poppy, maybe.

This exactly. Don’t land your poor DD2 with the drippy insubstantial Poppy.

If you like a y sound at the end, there are many good options:

Naomi
Ianthe
Selene (Sell-ee-nee)
Ismene (Is-mee-nee)
Ione (Eye-oh-nee)
Verity
Felicity
Ariadne
Cecily
Jessamy
Phoebe
Chloe
Leonie

If you aren’t bothered about the y ending then:

Marianne
Frances
Francesca
Cassia
Genevieve
Lois
Claudia
Adelaide
Harriet
Juliet
Clara
Annalise
Emmeline
Caroline
Serena
Saskia
Selina
Tessa
Flora

might all be options

NessieMcNessface · 12/10/2022 23:41

Penelope and Eliza
Penelope and Florence
Penelope and Violet
Penelope and Margot

AlwaysLatte · 12/10/2022 23:52

I would think the name Poppy was chosen only to go with the name Penelope, like an accessory name. I'd ratter choose something completely different to help them develop their own characters.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 24/10/2022 00:35

Constance definitely & Connie is a beautiful nn.
