Do you think Charles will be a very popular name for a boy this year? We are thinking Charles, Charlie but don't want him to be in a class full of them!

Charlie has been very popular and is starting to feel a little dated. Along with Alfie, Archie, Ollie etc.

I doubt King Charles will change much.

I really can't imagine Charles being massively popular this year. It's trending down the charts and it's on its way out of the Top 100 and frankly I don't think King Charles is popular enough to reverse his name's fortune.

Charlie IS very popular but it peaked about ten years ago so it's now trending down rather than trending up.

I think the new king will put people off using the name, so should be OK.

SummaLuvin · 10/10/2022 13:41

I don't think the Charles' ascension to the throne will have any notable increase in use.

Something to think about when using a classic name isn't just popularity now and within their year group. I have a classic name which has been used consistently for a really long time, though not as popular as something like Charles or Thomas, so in school I was the only 'Summa' but since leaving school and working where I mix with all ages there has always be at least one other 'Summa' and at one point there was five.

LadyKenya · 10/10/2022 13:45

It is already a popular name.

Kite22 · 10/10/2022 13:54

I don't think it will have a sudden surge.
It is a perfectly nice name. A real classic.
If you like it, then use it.

Cressie2 · 10/10/2022 20:22

Charlie for a boy is the sweetest name.

MissisBee · 10/10/2022 20:28

I think Charles, and Elizabeth too, will see a surge as middle names, but not so much with first names

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/10/2022 22:27

No surge imo - if anything it'll drop slightly in popularity as some won't want people thinking they might have named their son after King Charles. Having said that, I don't think it will drop much - Charles has stayed in the top 100 for at least the last century or more. It's a nice classic, timeless name imo (and there is always the nn Cal too, if he wants something less commonplace than Charlie).
