Albert (nn Bertie) or Magnus?

Expecting baby number 3. We currently have 2 girls. And set on girls names this time. But struggling for a boys name. Middle name would be Sydney (family name). I’ve always loved Bertie and prefer Albert to all of the other names Bertie is associated with. Hubby is the same. But the Prince Albert link is niggling at me and putting me off it which is really irritating me. We’ve also loved Magnus but when mentioned it to family (I know we shouldn’t!) in the past it has never been well received. Thoughts?

He is known to all his friends as Maggi.

Really? Maggi like the seasoning?

MammyS · 12/10/2022 17:21

Albert (Bertie) for sure. Magnus is awful and is only suitable for a cat. It just makes me think of Magnum. Bertie is nice

RuthW · 12/10/2022 18:33

Magnus is lovely.

itssquidstella · 12/10/2022 18:53

I have a Magnus! It's a great name 😁 We don't tend to shorten it, although MIL calls him 'Mags'.

AnnaTheMouse · 12/10/2022 18:58

Magnus or maybe another bertie name, like Robert

Mammyloveswine · 12/10/2022 19:03

I love Bertie!!

mum2jakie · 12/10/2022 19:07

Magnus just makes me think of Amanda's son on Motherland! Can't imagine coming across the name in real life

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/10/2022 23:45

How about Robert nn Bertie ?

Albert has been done to death

Magnus is Ok. Prefer Miles or Rufus

Love Magnus!

PinkSyCo · 13/10/2022 00:48

I think Magnus is a really ugly name. Albert is much nicer and goes well with Sydney.

Ellmau · 13/10/2022 00:54

Magnus.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 13/10/2022 00:56

I have a Magnus. His nickname at school has been Maggie!

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 13/10/2022 00:59

Love Magnus , pp said Gilbert, haven’t heard of that except Gilbert Bligh in Anne of Green Gables !? Love the nn Gil .

Lilacsunflowers · 13/10/2022 08:06

I used to like Magnus but seeing it shortened to Maggie is awful. Reminds me of Margaret Thatcher and Maggi en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maggi

Yep :) We wanted something familiar with a strong etymology but not something you hear every day. We do get the 'Oh like Anne of Green Gables!' comment a lot 😂He also goes by Gilly or Gilby.

custardbear · 13/10/2022 08:16

Magnus, I really dislike old fashioned names. Magnus sounds like a Nordic god, albert sounds like an old bloke to me

Enko · 13/10/2022 11:25

I dont think Prince Albert is a issue. If you want Bertie. Is Bertram a possibility? Being Scandinavian I dislike how Magnus is said in English so can never get my head around it.

sandytooth · 13/10/2022 12:45

There are loads of Albies round here. Don't do it!

HoHoHowMuch · 13/10/2022 12:58

I love Albert, particularly Bert for when he is older. If you like the Bert part more than the Al, there are lots of other names. Admittedly lots with a rather medieval sound to them!
Cuthbert
Bertrand
Bertram
Hubert
Colbert
Robert
Osbert
Herbert
Egbert

chaotical · 14/10/2022 14:46

I like Magnus so I'd go for it. Lots of cool Scandinavian men named Magnus. I've never been a fan of Albert or Bertie but that's just my taste. I don't think the Prince Albert piercing thing is a big issue considering how popular the name is nowadays.

PearlSupernova · 14/10/2022 18:01

Albert and nn Bertie is super cute!!

MassiveSalad22 · 15/10/2022 08:27

Magnus!! It’s the polar opposite of Bertie imo. I know about 4 Berties and it’s v twee IMO. Maybe they will be grown up Berties and by the time they’re grown up that will be completely normal, but I can’t imagine one and the other options I guess would be Bert or Al. Al is quite cool but Bert is just a no from me. Having said that, Bertie for a girl (Alberta) is a huge yes from me! Weird eh.

Love Magnus and the one I know has a brother called Gulliver! So that’s an additional suggestion from me 😄
