What is the general consensus of this name?

Due soon and me and DH love this name - to be honest we've never considered any other boys name!

However, I'm seeing more and more that it's being spelt Jaxon or Jaxsyn. We want to spell it Jackson.

Are we setting DS up to having to constantly spell his name out when he's older?

I think that spelling is what most people would assume. Nothing w

LT2 · 05/10/2022 11:36

Nothing wrong with the name. I think of it as an 'American' name

TheBirdintheCave · 05/10/2022 11:37

It's a surname, not a first name, and if your SO isn't called Jack or John it's a bit weird anyway.

ofwarren · 05/10/2022 11:37

I really don't like the name but the spelling Jackson is the better one.

Nadal · 05/10/2022 11:39

I like it and would use Jackson not the wacky spellings

coldcoldheartt · 05/10/2022 11:39

Terrible name but the best way to spell it at least

My all time favourite name. Do it! Most people would assume it’s spelt Jackson.

Afterfire · 05/10/2022 11:45

There’s a main character in the Netflix series Sex Education called Jackson. (He’s a nice character). I like it as long as it’s spelt the normal way.

Wasn't saying there's anything wrong with using an 'American' name by the way, whether or not anyone's American. Just meant i know it's popular there!

SiobhanSharpe · 05/10/2022 11:50

It's generally considered a bit, um down-market on here. It has class connotations of which your DH, as an American, might be unaware. Especially with the less usual spellings.
Jaxsyn is particularly bad, you'd be letting him in for a lifetime of having to spell it out. Also, in English English anyway, the pronunciation of that particular spelling may be subtly different.
Why not just Jack? Classic and timeless, comes in and out of popularity - so is likely to continue to do so.

AliBaliBears · 05/10/2022 21:00

I know a toddler Jackson, nickname Jax. It's not the kind of name I'd personally choose (not really a fan of surnames as first names) but I don't think you'll have a problem with the Jackson spelling.

I do love the name Jack though.

HighlandPony · 05/10/2022 21:06

My friends got a wee boy called Jackson. It’s fine. Though We used to sing Johnny cash and June carter at him when he was a toddler and he’d run around screaming at us to stop.

gretr · 05/10/2022 21:15

there was a lovely Jackson in Gilmore Girls. If your child’s heritage is American from your husband, then definitely go for a name that reflects that. Not sure why some heritage names are more or less class reflecting than others, especially if the child/child’s parents have not grown up in the perceived class system of Europe (UK especially).

I love that song!!!

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/10/2022 21:19

Jackson is standard

In the name Of Christ and all the Angels don’t spell it with an X.

It does have downmarket connotations I spose, though mainly with the x. If you are going to just call him Jack you might be better doing that. It’s very neutral, albeit way overused.

Ritascornershop · 05/10/2022 21:28

It’s a surname. What about Jack? That’s a lovely name.

LucyLastik · 05/10/2022 21:37

My cousin was named Jaxson. Looks terrible imo

mathanxiety · 06/10/2022 16:01

It's a nice name imo. I suspect your American husband will easily shrug off the hints that it's 'downmarket'.

Spell it Jackson.

jojacko07 · 13/08/2025 02:33

i named my son Jackson as this was my maiden name, his middle names are his grandfathers names. James, Joseph and it is a lovely, very special name to us

Graey · 13/08/2025 08:06

Just a reminder MN hate anything perceived as American 🙄 and anyone calling a name ‘down market’ think they have the best taste but usually don’t

DuchessOfNarcissex · 13/08/2025 12:39

Jackson is the preferred spelling as it has been around for longer. Jaxon is more popular but I don't like it.
You love the name so use it.

kim204 · 13/08/2025 12:57

Jaxon is considered a chav name - there I said it! I know others are alluding to it but better to make a decision fully informed I think.

I actually really like Jackson - but no one is going to know it doesn't have an x in it when you're shouting his name, and for that reason I wouldn't use it personally.

Alexandrine · 13/08/2025 14:28

Jackson is fine, albeit it always makes me wonder if the boys dad is called Jack (since that’s very obviously what the name means).

I do very much prefer classic Jack in the first place, but as long you don’t use the silly spellings of Jackson (and thankfully most people won’t) then it’s an okay name. Will fit in with all the Masons, Harrisons, Jensons, Hudsons etc at school.
