Please, I would like to choose a unique name for a boy. Any advice? I don't want it too common.

Go to the website DarkGreener. You can type in any name and see how popular it is in England and Wales.

Crunchymum · 02/10/2022 19:00

Do you have anything in mind? Or are you after suggestions?

FayCarew · 02/10/2022 19:30

The only way to give him a unique name is to make it up.
If you want to use a known name that is not in use nowadays, pick a name that you like but don't know anyone with it and check in darkgreener.
Names from about 60 years ago aren't used much nowadays, so something like Nigel, Jonathan, Mark, Simon, Darren, Clive, Alan, Brian, Jeremy etc will be unusual

Vaughn
Rhett
Blaise
Ephraim
Roarke

None of these are "unique", but they are fairly uncommon

I saw an article this week which said that the name Gary hasn't featured anywhere in the ONS stats since 1992

Others unlikely to be in widespread use: Godfrey, Geoffrey, Roger, Kenneth, Kevin, Trevor, Graeme, Wayne, Gavin, Aethelstan, Wulfric, Cuthbert, Ninian

Get a cat to run across your keyboard. That will get you an unique name.

toastofthetown · 02/10/2022 20:52

These are names from my list which were unranked in England and Wales in 2020. I can't guarantee they are all unique, as the data isn't released for one or two uses, but none of these names was used three or more times in 2020.
Algernon

Artemas
Bart
Cassander

Digory
Epke
Florizel
Jean-Baptiste

You're clearly a Face/Off Greek myth fan.

I agree with @FayCarew - choose a 'middle-aged dad name' and your child will be yoonique at school:
Terry
Bob
Dave
Andy
Steve
Alan
Geoff
Graham
I always think these parents who try so hard finding an unusual name and then what happens when the child ends up in a class with someone with the same name!

Happenchance · 02/10/2022 22:35

Assuming you're in the UK, these are uncommon names:

There's a world of difference between 'not too common' and unique.

Names that I would say aren't that common:
Adam, Anthony, Adrian, Angus, Benedict, Bradley, Cosmo, Casper, Christian, Declan, Darius, Damon, Edmund, Eliah, Fergus, Gareth, Gideon, Hal, Hugh, Ian, Ivan, Jude, Justin, Jeremy, Kester, Kit, Lachlan, Martin, Michael, Orson, Owen, Patrick, Paris, Quinn, Quentin, Rory, Rupert, Rio, Solomon, Titus, Timothy, Victor, Wesley, Wade, Zephaniah

Names I have literally heard once (discounting appearances in history or literature and names from other cultures/countries):
Alban, Ashwin, Aulay, Atticus, Boaz, Fitch, Hadrian, Jedediah, Jolyon, Ptolemy, Reed, Stanhope, Sultan, Tian, Toromo, Ulysses, Wilkie, Xaver
